Dole's "Godless" attack ad

I'm just saying that it's disappointing that the reaction of the Hagan camp is not "well, no, as a matter of fact I'm not an atheist, so perhaps we could talk about the issues instead" but rather "EWWWW!!! How dare you call me an icky, icky atheist!" I understand she has to deal with political realities, but it shows that there's a long way to go.

Shades of "Obama's a Muslim" as I see it.

Not {everyone} on this Forum we don't {does}.

Corrected this for you.

Recent polls suggest that this was a political loser for Dole.

The most recent poll, by Rasmussen (data sampled on 10/29), shows Hagan at 52%, while she had been in the mid-40s in earlier polls.

The attack obviously turns off atheists and people who think that atheists shouldn't be demogogued, but it probably doesn't do much for moderate Christians either when they find out that Hagan is a former Sunday-school teacher and a good Presbyterian.

Thou shalt not bear false witness is one of the Ten commandments.

Perhaps. It's hard to say for sure, because the "Obama's a Muslim" thing has been mostly an "underground," email-forwarding type thing, and I think the Obama campaign has mostly contended itself with brushing it aside as the nonsense it is when asked. They haven't hysterically and vehemently denied it as some gross, awful thing; but then again, they haven't really had to because it's not as though McCain is running ads accusing him of it.

Agree with you on the overboard reaction on Hagen's part, but this is North Carolina were talking about. Unless one has a real theocratic agenda, it really shouldn't matter what religion a candidate is or if they aren't religious. If scurrelous rumors about their beliefs (or lack thereof) pop up, the candidate should simply be able to say "I'm not X as people have been saying, I'm Y".

The most interesting thing about the Hagen's an atheist/Obama's a Muslim hububs is that the people raising the issue probably think of themselves as "Constitutionalists", but seem to forget that pesky Art. VI clause iii.

I agree in principle, but I have to admit that if I found out a candidate were a Scientologist I wouldn't vote for them. Or a Raelian. It's just prejudice, I guess, but I can tolerate the oldfashioned gods-n-Jesus religions a lot better than I can the UFOs-and-crystals kind. The former type have gained, if not legitimacy, a certain gravitas from simply having been around a long time. The latter type seem more directly evidence of personal insanity.

Another one, this from Arizona:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27481905

Connie Thompson, married to Mark Thompson, said in an e-mail that Ableser "is part Jewish, part Christian and now part Mormon. This guy has no idea what he is and shouldn't be counseling kids."
The reporter is confused and thinks this is different, but it's the same.

I'd agree with both of those cases and add Moonies.

I base a lot of my political p[ositions on my religious beliefs, but will not impose my relgious beliefs as such on others, beyond that life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness be respected, and that no religious test be applied to determine one's fitness to live in a civilized society with full civil rights. I am a strong adherent of the Talmudic dictum "The essence of the Law is this: that which is hateful unto you, you shall not do unto another. All else is but commentary."

What Liddy Dole did was a hateful thing. It is an un-Christian thing. It is in direct violation of the commandment not to bear false witness. It is defamatory in that it falsely accuses Hagan of not being a part of her constituancy, that she is a prentender, a wolf in sheeps clothing. It was said with an intent to do harm. Time for Liddy to step down in disgrace.

What an evil, spiteful, dishonest creep she has been. How can she be considered fit to hold an office that puts her in a position to make decisions effecting the quality of life for her constituents if she does not even fear to violate the very creed by which she claims to live, and by which, as far as we can tell, Hagan actually does live?

I would actually like to see the lawsuit go through and an order issued to pull the ad by noon tomorrow. And Liddy should have to pay all court costs, perhaps damages.

I like the sound of money leaving the campaign coffers of a corrupt Republican without its benefitting the campaign or the party.

I wish I'd known about this earlier. I'd have sent $1.00 to Dole and then announced to the press that she'd taken my godless money.

For the record: She lost.

I had a lot of respect for the job Dole did as head of the Red Cross, she is probably a capable and smart business person. Regardless of ability I would vote against any politician who felt that I should have no political voice or be otherwise unrepresented.

Are we still talking about this?

Smell ya later, Elizabeth Dole.
