Actually, I don't agree entirely with the explanation on the site that Ashles originally linked to. An "observation" in QM is simply any interaction which exceeds the Heisenberg limit for the specific process in question. It doesn't require that the interacting object be "more complicated" than the object under test as that site implies.
For example, if an electron were to pass close by another electron, provided the original electron were perturbed sufficiently (by the charge of the second electron for example) for any difference to be detectable (which is why it needs to be beyond the Heisenberg limit) then that would count as an "observation". Clearly no "consciousness" is involved in that.
Anyway, if you want to learn some QM all you need to do is type "quantum mechanics" into google and start reading the links. All the ones I saw - at least on the first page - looked O.K. to me.
