This. I don't think anyone really gives a crap about Limbaugh himself; he's a radio host, not a cult leader. He does, however, have a following. Considering the faction fights and leadership vacuum in the GOP these days, I can't see any Republican politicians wanting to alienate a potential part of their base.

But how many times has the official head of the republican party apologized to him for not toeing the party line as spouted by Rush? That is real political power.

Ken, Rush claims to speak for conservatives.

He has complained in the past about some Republicans being not conservative enough, to include John McCain and Arnold Schwarzenager. I think the term he used to use was RINO: Republican In Name Only.

Also, per your question, I think it is his desire to speak for the GOP, in terms of 'what I say is what the PoV the GOP take.'

Most rational people would be happy to see it bcome what it was under Eisenhower. The election of a GOP president would become less catatrophic than sahould one of today's generation of GOPers got their feet through the door again.
