Should we shut the hypothetical street corner porn booth

You're pushing 50. The issue is readers who are pushing 15, and are already reading stuff that was never available to you, over the course of your reading career.
Assuming you meant to reply to me.

The internet was already around by the time stuff like that got interesting. There was absolutely no shortage of weird erotica on it. I'm sure there's more of it now but I was never short of things to read, as extreme as I liked. There's only so many hours in the day.

Anyway my contention here is mostly that I haven't experienced much, I guess you could call it, mission creep? Stuff that was gross to me when I was a teenager is still gross.

I've mentioned before, and still think it's interesting, that for me the nastier things are fine as written word/imagination, but a huge turnoff when acted out. I don't even want to watch Outlander, and I'm fine with a lot of similar things in print. It's fantasy; it's no fun at all if it gets too real.

I watched a few minutes of that video essay and eh. While I agree that sex without warning in a YA novel is pretty obnoxious, and sex peppered into too many YA novels can be obnoxious as well, it doesn't seem like this particular essayist is going to be the one to inform me about the scope and extremity of the problem.

By the time she got to 'you're not allowed to say anything because that'll mean you're crapping on professional women/women's interests and the feminists will be mad at you' she's lost me. That's not part of a good argument, that's a persecution complex looking for its friends & allies. Lady, you are talking about the problem right now. Is it supposed to be part of your persuasive technique that you've told me you'll be in trouble for speaking out? Am I supposed to get the impression that you're a brave truth teller that's going to boldly stand up to - what, booktok feminists? Give me a break.

@Poem, my post is an indictment of your approach. Your thumbs-up is either dishonest or ignorant.
And yet you do think porn is harmful and have talked about absent fathers and 'progressive' values (#3,577). Porn won't, in general, be conducive to family stability and child rearing.

Your premise is BS. No real evidence of any of that.

Clearly, the message of porn is to encourage sexual restraint and monogamy - values that aid child rearing and societal cohesion.

There is no message to porn.. I see no problem with societal cohesion caused by it. The real problem in this world is ignorance. And how religion promotes it.

Nihilism on full display right here.
So? What is the problem with nihilism? There is no intrinsic value to our lives. It is up to the individual to create meaning. Religious people insist that meaning comes from God. But they cannot prove that there is a God. They as individuals chose to pretend it was this imaginary being as opposed to themselves.

So someone who thinks life is without meaning, purpose or value? Where did you find someone like that in this thread?

I think what you must have meant to say, if you will allow me to put words in your mouth for once, was "Opinions other than mine on display right here".

Nihilism is a philosophical viewpoint that life is without inherent meaning, value, or purpose. It is a rejection of objective truth and morals, and its followers believe that values are human constructs, leading to skepticism.

The key word is inherent. That there is some reason/meaning to our lives built in. My life has the meaning I give to it. It's not built in. I'm in favor of anything that leads to skepticism and critical thinking.

The problem of course is like all philosophy, a lot of personal crap gets added on. Such as extreme pessimism and cynicism. Or that there is no objective truth or morals

I absolotely believe there are things that are objectively true. We just don't always know or can say what is objectively true. But we do very often have every reason to claim we know what is objectively true. Gravity is objectively true. So is evolution. So is the atomic weight of each of the elements in the periodic table. So is atomic decay of those elements.

It is also objectively true that snakes don't converse with humans. Neither do donkeys or bushes, burning or not. Humans don't instantly turn into salt, they don't rise from the dead or walk on water.

And clearly, there is no such thing as objective morals. He and I certainly don't agree on what is moral. I think the Bible is one of most immoral books ever written. It condones slavery, sexism and genocide for the sake of an imaginary being. I don't.

The nihilist struggles to object on moral issues (obviously) - certainly they cannot demur in any objective sense; which is why we are where we are at.
