Doctors accidentally attach man's colon to his bladder

This story made me cringe line no other:

Full story here: http://www.delawareonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071127/NEWS/711270347/1006/NEWS

A surgery meant to reverse a colostomy on a Dover man went horribly wrong last year, resulting in fecal mater being discharged from his penis and urine passing through his colon, according to a lawsuit filed in Superior Court.

During the procedure, the suit alleges doctors at Kent General Hospital improperly stapled the colon to the bladder instead of the rectal stump. This left the patient with diarrhea, as well as gas and liquid stool passing from his penis.

I can see why the wife is suing as well. Thinking about it gives me the willies.

To quote the radio show where I heard this story: "At least they didn't accidentally attach it to his esophagus..."

"Such a nice day outside, I think I'll go out the window!"

What does "accidentally" mean here ? It's not like the doctor were "oops, I think the colon slipped off my hands and fell on his bladder. Tough luck."

I'm too lazy to go re-read the rest of the article, but it basically said that the colon stump and bladder are close, and it causes difficulty in the procedure. Although it obviously sounds like they didn't realize it happened at the time.

Is this a serious question, or are you thinking of the man who was sweeping in the nude and "accidentally" slipped and fell on the broom handle?

Or the guy who was vaccuuming his stairs in the nude and "accidentally" got his genitalia caught up in the nozzle.... ( it wasn't really me )

He was seeking further treatment for prostatitis, but it turned out he was only constipated.;)

I'm with T.A.M.

I've actually seen a couple of cases in patients with diverticulosis where a colonic fistual forms with the bladder. One patient I worked-up in the anesthesia clinic, I kid you not, told me with a large chuckle that he had been - and I quote verbatem - "farting through his dick" when I asked him how he knew he had a problem. Really didn't seem to bother him much... which is kind of scary...

Of course, this was a presenting complaint and not a post-operative one.

Did the poor guy get some free corrective surgery for what that must have done to his urethra and other parts? :boxedin:

I'll lay my wager in diverticulitis.

But as I have been present a human autopsy, it is really hard to tell one tissue from another sometimes, especially when there are disease processes. (The cadaver in question had died of cirrhosis of the liver and was in bad shape!)

I hope no one tried to give him oral pleasure...

Seriously though, I did not know this was possible. I have some reading to do tonight!

Hmm well the proximity of the two are very close but the bladder has ureters entering it whereas the stump of the colon would not have ureters. I vote for a fistula between the stump of the colon and the bladder as the most likely explanation although who knows since they say that this type of problem has been previously documented.
