Do "straight" women exist?

1. I'm surprised there isn't a thread on this already.
2. SMM&T is probably the more logicla place for this discussion but SI&CE gets more traffic.

So do exclusively heterosexual woman exist? According to a study <insert usual warning here> by Gerulf Rieger, no; woman are innately sexually attracted to other woman, and mainly to men also. So lesbians do exist.

Studies with volunteers in sexual arousal experiments suggest that women are, on average, physiologically sexually aroused to both male and female sexual stimuli. Lesbians are the exception because they tend to be more aroused to their preferred sex than the other sex, a pattern typically seen in men.

Lesbians tend to be exclusively sexually attracted to women, while straight women are more likely to be aroused by both sexes, bases on the relatively small study of of 345 women. The volunteers were asked about their sexual preferences and compared these with their arousal levels when shown videos of attractive men and women; this showed that 28% of straight women were mostly aroused by their preferred sex, compared with 68% of gay women.

The researchers concluded that no woman is "totally straight". Who do the forumites think? Accurate? Needs more research? Rubbish?

It certainly seems to be the case that Western society is now generally OK with women displaying sapphic tendencies, indeed the press love to report when X female celebrity is spotted snogging X female (celebrity or otherwise). It could be said that women have been allowed to embrace bisexuality in a way that men are not - a male celebrity with another man is pretty much shoved into the "gay" box straight away.

And research indicates this may be biological in basis.
 
Why limit this question to just women?

I'm sure that one could just as reasonably ask, "Do 'straight' men exist?"

I think the research addressed that question, and their conclusion was that yes, they did.


I would contend, though, that there is a flaw in the research. Sexual arousal and sexual desire are not the same thing.
 
I suppose there is an evolutionary societary advantage to having mothers cling to other mothers.

I wonder how far down the tree it can be traced? Neanderthal three-some anyone? C'mon, I only need two more volunteers.;)

Women typically stayed at the encampments/villages, etc., and they had to get along because of that proximity. Having a passion for someone in the group could have been useful, I think.

I wonder if Spartan women took a clue from their men?
 
I've tried to convince Mrs J to get herself a cute live in girlfriend but she's not playing along.

Lets go back to the past....The distant past. Hunting and gathering stuff. The men are out....Hunting. The women are left together back at the campsite....A few kids running around, not much to do after a bit of gathering....
 
I am a woman. I am not attracted to, and have never been attracted to, other women. I can stir up no interest in it whatever. I do not enjoy female-on-female porn. I have never had a fantasy or dream about sexual activity with another woman.

Anecdotal, I know, but there you go. I seem to be about as far to the hetero side of the spectrum as one can get.

Not much to do! If only. If anything it would be the hunting parties that had long times without anything to do.

Seems to go both ways. Who better to rub those aching muscles from a long day tracking stegosaurus through the bush than Bob with those big strong hands?

I mean have you played organized sports? ;)

What makes you think Neanderthal women didn't have big strong hands, form all the gathering, tanning hides, pounding laundry on the rocks, pounding rocks on the seeds and nuts they gathered?

Besides, it was those big strong hands that made them so popular with the other women.;)

Oh, I meant like on a road trip, those away games while the lady folk are back at the cave weaving baskets. With only the light of the fire and Bob's bearskin loincloth keeping you warm, hands start wandering...
