For anyone who thought sharia law didn't keep up with the times.
Last week defenders of Islamic law received a publicity blow when a Malaysian court evoked Sharia law to allow a man to divorce his wife by text message.

Yes, text message. As in: "Am dvrcng u".

The decision was, quite rightly, condemned by women's rights groups in Malaysia, who say to condone such frivolity with Islamic law highlights the way it is inherently bias towards men and leaves women with the short end of the stick.

Under Sharia law, a man can divorce a woman simply by announcing his intentions. This is followed by a three month "cooling off" period before the divorce can be finalized, to create an opportunity for resolution. However, if a woman wants a divorce, she must go before a court to seek a divorce, and she must prove her husband has an inadequacy - usually impotency or extended absence. If not, she has no right to divorce him.
Link.

How nice to see Islam embracing the 21st century.

If the Koran was a political manifesto and Sharia law a philosophical ideology, no one would think twice about condemning it. But because there's a god involved, all criticism is racist...

Why would a Malaysian Muslim divorce their wife in an English language text message?

Wow, Muslims of yester-year were confined to leaving voice messages on the answering machine. This is truly a step beyond.

This actual makes perfect logical sense. If you think about it, Muslim women aren't allowed to talk to men who aren't their husband. So unless he's really good about closing that conversation down fast, there could be a lot of potential for the breaking of holy Islamic edicts, which we all know is absolutely horrible.

Really, this is just the most logical way to make sure the word of the Prophet is followed. If you think about it hard enough, you'll realize that he even probably anticipated text messaging phones with his omnipotent vision when he wrote that.

Aw, jeeze, LL, can't I at least have the huge entertainment of seeing the personal attack before it gets edited? Where do I file my complaint? :boggled:

If you want to see unedited posts, change your subscription status so that you get instant e-mail notification. Then the content of the post is sent to you.

I think a court in Egypt rejected this a few years ago. You wouldn't want someone to steal your phone and prank divorce your wife, would you?

...which assumes the offending post is the one which triggers the e-mail notification which may well not be the case.

That's not a problem since the husband can take her back (has the right to) after she had her period three times. ;)

hmm an online sms message service, I smell shenannigans

for info:
every post after you start the subscription is PMd or emailed to you, in it's original form.

It's okay - Ian Osborne PM'd me with an explanation; evidently, the OP somehow proves - to XBoxWarrior, anyway - that I'm some kind of racist. XBoxWarrior's unedited post also prompted Ian's first post here, which sounds confused now that it's been divorced from its original context.

And thank you, but no, I don't want a flood of emails in my mailbox every time someone responds to one of my posts.

Are you sure, Chill? I thought the subscription only sent you an email for the first post after you logged off, with subsequent posts on that particular thread not producing emails until you logged on and logged off again?

hmmm... you may be right - sorry. Perhaps a new thread would be more appropriate to clear it up.

It is really the same old thing... if the Islamic extremists were Americans, they'd
be Republicans. Of course, isn't it better for a man to divorce his wife outright, rather than to cheat on her for years, or get caught trolling for gay sex in public restrooms?

I always find it interesting when people decide to go after crappy behavior in other countries, while ignoring the crappy things that go on all around them.

Fixed it for you. No need to thank me.

Besides, how could Republicans be Islamic extremists when everybody knows (don't they, Joe?) that Republicans are all Christian fundies?

Yes because we all know that everything crappy in the world that's worth discussing happens in the U.S. And crappy developments in other parts of the world could never affect us here in the U.S. in any way. And it's utterly unimportant for anyone in the U.S. to know about the crappy things that crappy people in other parts of the world do. Because of all the crappy countries in the world, the U.S. is the crappiest.
