Discovery Channel "Documentary" is Shameful

Hope you girls realize that if the Republican/Tea party/bible thumper crowd have their way and PBS is killed off, the hunt for the Megalodon/ mermaid/ ancient alien nazi faith healers will be what passes for SCIENCE TV.

Don't forget the Bebee Jeebus on a wooden Rocking Horse Raptor on the History Channel

:D

With the smashing success of the historically accurate and apparently riveting docudrama, 'Sharknado', I'm sure they were hoping for some sort of 1930's 'War of the Worlds' type reaction, where people run screaming from their homes fearful a giant prehistoric shark could coming swimming up the sewer pipe and out the toilet, from this epic presentation. Of course that's all speculation on my part as I didn't watch either of them.

...and for those who say "what's the harm/it's just entertainment", there is this quote from the above link...
...some 70 percent of viewers of the Discovery Channel now believe that the Megadolon exists, according to an open letter written in Discover Magazine by Christie Wilcox, an evolutionary biologist and freelance writer. Wilcox writes that nearly everything depicted in the documentary “is a complete and total myth”.
The "harm" is in the spreading of lies, when the truth is widely known.
That "poll" was a Discovery Channel internet poll, and internet polls, well...

I'm really not worried what stupid people think. They can believe in Bigfoot and alien anal probes and the Loch Ness Monster, no skin off my back. These are the same idiots who though the Animal Planet mermaid "documentary" was real a few months back.

I read this thread last night. Several hours later a friend called me and told me about the ''megalodon'' that is running around the oceans. He was very serious and sounded worried. He got his info from this show. Very sad indeed.

The best thing to tell such a friend is that as long as they always stay at least 6.5 miles from the shoreline, they'll be almost totally safe from megalodon. After all, it sounds like he will believe anything, so go ahead and have some fun.

Hope you realize that if the Madigan/Daley/Obama cartel get THEIR way, the hunt for the Megalodon/ mermaid/ ancient alien nazi faith healers will be made by 47 "assistant producers/ward committeemen" whose contribution will be sleeping in the Streets and San trucks, and getting the votes out on election day.

Not perfect though.

There was a bit of criticism a couple of years back when Frozen Planet showed baby polar bears which were actually shot in a zoo, not the wild. I think it a storm in a teacup to be honest, but it wouldn't have done any harm to announce that some of the shots were artificial constructs.

Of course not. Are Nova though?

I found an article which explains how Discovery has made a much of BBC's success in this area possible. However it also announces the end of the partnership. The focuses on extremes, explosions and dangerous creatures to be found in some of these joint ventures has always turned me off. David Attenborough taught me patience and that excitement can be found in examining the everyday.

I paid good money for a "Bengal Tiger Repellant" daily spray. It's pretty long lasting (only needed to buy four refills so far) and it's been 100% effective.

I think if we work together, we can get the maker to do a "Megeladon" version!

I won't say who just yet as I'm hoping for a referral discount for bringing in the rest of you. Ok?

That sounds good to me.

Too late, there is a megalodon repellent spray. However, you must re-apply after swimming as it washes off in water.

Hmmm... quickly? :boggled:

Yes, as long as you don't get wet, it is 100% guaranteed effective. Would you like to buy some? Only $9.95 plus shipping and handling. If you act now you can get a second bottle FREE. Just pay an additional shipping and handling fee.

I got one for $8.95 that's guaranteed to give protection for one full week from Megalodon sharks, regardless of if it gets wet from fresh or salt water. In fact if you can prove a Megalodon gets within 100 yards of you you get ONE MILLION DOLLARS.

Actually, a poll of people watching the show that was taken while the show was on came up with the same results...69 % believing without evidence.

...so what can you find "wrong" with that poll??...don't you think the people watching were being candid?

It matters little....my point still stands....Discovery is spreading lies when the actual truth of the matter is known.

I guess I should thank my lucky stars that there isn't a alien UFO week.

I expect to hear about graboids in our beaches this time next year.

I am reminded of this little gem

...but if you watch this movie, beware...the producers thought Brooke Hogan was sexy, and presented her as such....which was actually scarier than the land shark. :)

You know what? I'm gonna revise my assesment. One of my co-workers, a biologist, was talking after I posted about this really interesting new documentary on TDC. Apparently even scientists can be fooled by it.

Very funny.

I have just one thing to say:

Coelacanth.

Actually I'm a bit worried about what stupid people think, as television producers will market to them. So the more people who think <RandomCrypto> is real and who give a god damn about Honey Boo Boo, the more of that kind of dreck and the fewer programs like Connections.

Can't say I blame the channels for making what are apparently wise financial decisions wrt their programming, but I can weep at the resulting lessened availability of quality, educational/informative shows.

I remember getting sucked into the fake Mermaid documentary. I even made a thread here about it.

Perhaps it is a good thing I missed this. Not that I believe I would have bought it but even if I didn't it would have made me angry.
