Did you hear this?

This case was brought up on a cable news station after the Duke trial was thown out. It was held up as an example of, as most here point out, a burried story because the racial equation was wrong. If reversed, of course, Revs. Al & Jesse would be all over it. I don't know which station, Fox or CNN.

Maybe the reason this case is media buried is because its so disturbing and sickening that people will change the channel. I honestly wish I had never clicked that Wikipedia link.

And people wonder why I got a concealed carry permit. People like these exist.

I think it's possible that people just think this story isn't sufficiently interesting. I mean, in a murder-rape (as opposed to a regular rape) the victims are dead, which means they can't stand in front of a camera and be sad. Furthermore, this is (by the looks of the Wikipedia page) just an isolated incident: two people went to a restaurant, and then were brutally killed. It's not like a serial killer where there's an ongoing story to hook onto, it's just "a cute couple was killed :(," so unlike a lot of stories about people who torture and kill people, they can't build it into a big news event.

There may be a racial element to the decision, but really, this just feels like a story that doesn't have legs beyond local news or as filler.

What I want to know is why, when there are stories like this, the media doesn't mention Leopold and Loeb more often or indeed, at all?

Maybe that story is so old as to seem outdated and irrelevant? Or so old most under 40 don't remember them? I remember the story, but it never comes to mind for me when I read about stories like these....

As best as I can recall, haven't most of the cases of "race riots" been sparked by the actions or inactions of the police? Not incited simply by white-on-black crime? If that's your question, I mean. It was a little obscure.

You may well be correct! Maybe it's a perception error on my part.

That's the nice thing about bringing questions to this forum. I either get good answers, or get forced to do some studying to defend/define my position, or admit I'm full of brown stinky stuff, and concede the point :)

I'll be doing some digging now, and see if I can find anything to do one of the above.

Did any of you hear about this story on the Evening News? I sure didn't. You have to ask yourself why.

How is this not a "hate crime" and how are these people anything but complete monsters. People who do this sort of thing to other people (all people who do this sort of thing) have forfeited their humanity and do not deserve to exist.

I want to add that somehow, Imus saying something stupid and offensive somehow warrants endless media coverage, but people do something like this, something completely beyond the bounds of humanity and human decency and there is hardly a peep. When people like Al Sharpton and others whine about how awful Imus is, I want to vomit. And even more astonishing and sickening, I wouldn't be surprised to encounter apologists.

May their deaths be interesting and soon.

I can sympathize and I apologize. I regretted reading the story when someone sent it to me. But I believe that these young people deserved to have a light shown on this atrocity and when something happens for which outrage is an appropriate response, there should be outrage. If Imus was worthy of outrage, this certainly is. Someone once sent me a story where french shark fishermen were using living puppies on hooks as bait. I didn't link to the story in here because it was so awful and precisely because I didn't want to poison other people minds with this kind of stuff. It's like certain kinds of truly obscene pornography - once it gets put into your mind, you can't get rid of it.

Gee, thanks. Now I have images in my mind of cute chocolate labs on fish hooks, drowning, and S&M bukkake, on top of the torture story from this thread.:boxedin:

Looks like I will need help, and fast. I must call on the bana phone song.

Just dug myself a deeper hole didn't I. I suppose it would sound disingenuous to say I'm sorry now, but, believe me, you didn't get the full impact of the story if you didn't read it. It is one of a number of things I have encountered that tend to keep me awake at night. Sometimes I think, how does a person live in world in which such awful things happen. But there is more really good stuff that happens.

So you want to harangue the press into jumping on the hate crime bandwagon in this case too before a motive is even established?

Why not? With all of the White against black 'hate crimes' they like to cover why not one that's black against white? It's only fair.
