Did Ted Cruz praise a racist?

So, anyone come up with why we need more people like Helms in office? Do we really need to appeal to irrational fear? Was there anything redeeming about Helms?

Perhaps the mere act of invoking Helms' name with a heroic mantle in 2013 will so taint Cruz' image among reasonable republicans that Cruz will be even more reviled. In that event, Helms will have redeemed himself at least partially from the grave.:D

Friends, Conservatives, Countrymen, lend me your ears: RandFan has a point. Our friendly neighborhood progressives are simply giving Helms and his supporters the same harsh treatment they gave Robert Byrd. And good for them, if I do say so myself.

The guy that left the Klan and denounced racial intolerance? How so?

You can skip the labels with me. I've been a staunch conservative until only recently. You can call me an independent. Robert Byrd was an ass.

Wow, stunningly off topic.

Thread Jack's gonna jack I guess
Nope, the rectum from Texas indeed said Benghazi. More feces from feces exporters. Said yesterday that the Syrian thing was run up so people would forget Benghazi. Which they should -except they should remember who refused to vote for the money State requested to beef up embassy security for over a year before Benghazi.
Subtle hint: it was not the Democrats, it was the republikkkers.

Or Cruz, McConnell, Paul the bigger and Paul the lesser POS, Bachman and all their ilk? Mrs/Dr. F says re: your last line: "He died."

If nothing else, Mrs/Dr F likes republikkkers less than I do - and that takes some doing. (She introduced me to the kkk spelling of same - she got it from another fan group........)

I'd respond, but it is off topic, and the spelling you used is indicative of a lack of rational discussion.

There is a moderated thread on Benghazi. If you can comply with the moderated thread posting guidelines, I'd be happy to discuss your misapprehension regarding funding there.

Good luck.

I think Byrd deserves some credit for that. As does Strom Thurmond, Wallace and others. Switching political parties in order to continue to be a racist is political expediency. Given how pernicious such sentiments are and given how corrosive they are to society and culture, I think it more than fair to condemn those who refused to reconsider their stance.

Does anyone have even an anecdote to mitigate against this man's odious opinion about an entire group of Americans.

You are being misled.

How is obama's Pastor doing?

. . .

Wow, stunningly off topic.

Am I the only one seeing the contradiction here? This is something I would ignore, except when you have an aggressive attacking post like this:

I can't stand quiet. Anyways, back to the topic

I don't like either of them. Your point?

Well, then let's get on topic, shall we? You've been dancing around the issue through the whole thread and while I like a good soft shoe as well as the next guy, I'd be curious what you have to say beyond knee-jerk defending of the troglodyte conservative flavor of the month. What is it we should join Cruz in admiring about Helms? What do you admire about him?

"Doth protest too much" comes to mind. Let's move beyond Helms' racism. What are some of his laudable attributes? Was the stance that Helms had on terrorism simply political expediency or are did he have a substantive point? I still think we have much work to do domestically to ward against terrorism. It would have been nice if the $2T we spent on the Iraq war could have been spent on local infrastructure improvements with respect to protection against terrorism.

I'm pretty sure that I pointed out that the linked video was misleading.

Kinda trutherish really, but something I've some to expect from the partisans around here.

I also pointed out Obama's lavish praise for the good Pastor, a visious racist if I ever saw one.

But you know. Replucikkkans or something.

Why did you bother to provide a quote if you weren't even going to address it? Strawman, Tu Quoque. Let me guess, Republican, right?

I guess pointing out that I already addressed the video does not count.

Let me guess partisan?

Oh, you're here for the fighting, then.

@Randfan,
To your point, and not to Godwin the thread, there are various "but he loved his dog" points made by NC folks about Helms. As a representative of his constituency, he was topnotch. He out-spent his opponents over and over but largely probably didn't have to because he was well-liked on the ground level in North Carolina. My objections to him are not just his racist side, but his entire social agenda - or anti-agenda.

He was essentially a good old boy made up to look respectable when it came to his social conservancy. "UNC? You mean the University of Negroes and Communists?" Hyuk, hyuk! That kind of crap should be bracketed by the speaker spitting tobacky. I know some people who hate UNC, but they're generally Duke or NC State basketball fans. I can't recall many people thinking that UNC was the hotbed of progressive activism. It was a stupid thing to say but he was pandering to a stupid audience and he fit right in with them.

Oh, you're here for the fighting?

Oh no not at all.

For example I am going to from now on ignore your posts that ignore everything I actually wrote.

Say the video was totally misleading.

Lets ignore that because democrats or something.

Partisan nonsense.

How is the video misleading? It's a segment - an introductory segment of a speech he made. He's obviously playing to someone off on stage right who is related to or a former staffer of Helms. But he clearly says that we need people willing to "say those crazy things". I quoted one of them. Do we need people saying that UNC stands for University of Negroes and Communists? "Senator No" said some crazy things. Crazy AND reprehensible. Cruz certainly knows what Helms stood for and it wasn't solely his Senate FRC role.
