Did Christianity do anything unique in history?

Some of us do know what we're talking about.
We're usually those who have read the whole thing through, several times, understand the meanings behind the difficult verses, and don't try to turn rhetorical flourishes into meanings that contradict clear text.

Any chance one of these creatures will show up on this forum? From my many years of following such forums as alt.atheism where Christian apologists show up to convert we followers of Satan on a regular basis, no such all-knowledgeable entity has ever made an appearance. A mythical creature for sure.

Remember -- "I interpret the Bible. You misinterpret the Holy Words of the Lord".

Of course christianity did something unique.
How many religiouns have a still alive 2 year old thread regarding the "evidence" to its validity :D

that be nothing; the xtian sect condemned galileo and then a few centuries later had to eat their words.

and now most all xtians know the church was wrong and still put their lives/commitments to them

are yu a profit?

are you alive?

are you as capable as any previously to ever walk this earth (but now equiped with more knowledge at your fingertips than any prophet that every was even spoken of)?

heck i could see it that you have more available than Moses (lived in pharoahs house, access to egyptian libraries), jesus (never wrote a thing as far as anyone knows) and muhammad (completely illiterate per quran), not to mention confucius, darwin, newton and einstein combined; are you sitting at your terminal with a greater capacity of knowledge than any and all of them combined?

be fair.

i believe you are!

I listened to a broadcast recently about how the idea that Christianity uniquely allowed science to develop to the degree it has in the West was debunked. It got me thinking, is there anything Christianity did in history that was unique, that uniquely changed civilisation for the better? Or would any other dominant religion have done just as it did?

Separation of Church and state seems to be a predominantly Christian thing to me.

In a way, all history is a series of unique events, so I guess you mean something not even similar to what other religions have done.
For example, Michelangelo's works were inspired by and patronized by the Christian church. You could find plenty of examples of other religions inspiring and/or patronizing a great artist, but there was only one religion that inspired and patronized Michelangelo.

Christian monks copied and preserved the writings of classical authors during the Dark Ages. Without this, I don't think the Renaissance could have been possible. Again, other religions probably preserved learning at other points in history, but in Europe*, it was only done by Christians.

So it depends on how you define "unique".

*ETA: I should say "northern Europe" I suppose. Muslim scholars never really had a Dark Age, and they were at work in Spain.

I don't think that's accurate. I think it might have come from secularists living in predominantly Christian societies, but the idea didn't come from any Christian church.

... most American Christians would bristle immediately in response to the notion that they have committed their lives to the Roman Catholic Church.
This is about as accurate as everything else you've had to say so far about Christianity.

then if i said that you are bound to carbon and most all life ever born is/was bound to carbon, then to point out the most prevelant isotope is Carbon-12 which basically means that all life you ever even heard of as far as human beings is bound to 6 electron, 6 protons and 6 neutrons (the chemical description of C-12)

would that mean you are branded 'upon the head'? (now aware)

rev 22: 4 and they shall see His face, and His name [is] upon their foreheads,

can you help with that "difficult verse"?

I am not sure of what your beliefs are yet. i am still trying to figure it out. However, the book of Revelations was written during the time of Nero's persecution of Christians. Most of this book is likely accusing Nero of being the Anti-Christ. Also, the oldest manuscript of Revelations has been found recently in Oxyrhynchus. This manuscript states that the number is actually 616, not 666. Please see:

nothing to figure out.

my religion is equality

my belief is; knowledge evolves

my faith: mankind is capable

my hope: the children will know

But not much of any label any can really put on me (well, perhaps we can go over more later)

i know there are a bunch of different items as well intepretations

no matter, i kind of like branding folks with comprehending they are of 666 (c-12) whether they like it or not.

ie... not a one can use the ideology and not be given a taste of themselves (by me)

in my view, we are all just as capable of any cruelty any theology ever wrote about and on the opposite, just as capable of all the compassion in the world.

Each are just as capable as any other and that is where i find the foundations to equality something each can self realize.

awakening or even revealing is what truth does, even if the long sought rendition (666) has a new twist for todays world, i kind of have a little love for the giggle

but please, if i am in direct error, please please educate me; i love to learn what i didnt know before.

Ah an Irregular Verb. I interpret the Bible. You misinterpret the Holy Words of the Lord. He's going to hell for heresy.

Sorry, but you're seriously wrong. There are still people today condeming Gallileo.
Have you seen "Jesus Camp"?

and the only way to prove galileo was/is wrong is if you walked off the edge of the world and fell into hell.

It would be like a child going to school, you send them there, and each day the childs knowledge improves and progresses but then you not comprehending that knowledge EVOLVES

ie.... darwin WON!

Christianity killed the rapid progress in science the Greeks, then Romans had been making.

Much shifted to other cultures.

Then the Renaissance happened, which is to say, the thwarting of control by religion. Suddenly there was competition in religions, even amongst Christians themselves. Either relax your control or lose out to faster-developing (economically) religions.

So...no.
