Did anyone else fall ill after TAM8?

My wife and I attended TAM8 on Saturday and after the drive back to LA Sunday, I got ill and she did not.

I also know 3 other people who got sick and have reported their illness to the Clark County health department.

The number to call is 702-759-1300. There’s already a case opened. Mention report #12702. Your input would be added to this report, so mention that number. All personal info is kept confidential.

I had no issues, and ate at the buffet twice, the Deli twice, and in the Coronado Cafe three times, in addition to the meals served to us during the course of the event.

So far, no problems -- and I hope it stays that way!

Not a single issue here. Well...post TAM depression aside.

I got sick at tam. It lasted just one day, though I'm still being careful what I eat. Now... I ate about everywhere at South Point, but I also grabbed a bit at the Minneapolois airport (not sure how long a little food poisoning takes). I'd also say with SO many people that odds of a few of us getting sick is going to happen. Did I get sick from something at South Point or the airport or something I ate even before I left home? I will object to the little store at South Point charging me $8 for a tiny bottle of Pepto Bismol! Way overpriced! ggggrrrrr....

No health problems so far, and I ate at various places, including the buffet.

It's no surprise that some people report problems, though. When you put 1300 people in a room and allow them close contact, you immediately have an open buffet for any germ those people may be carrying.

I had some stomach thing for a few days, though it really hit me hard monday. I popped a few antacids to cope with it. Though that did naught for me monday though :(.

I seem to have gotten rid of it during the trip home though, keeping my fingers crossed.

I picked up a cold.

Same here. Scratchy throat, cough, and runny nose. Seems to be better today, though.

I'm sure I didn't pass it along to anyone. It's not like I was shuttling people back and forth from the Skepchick party in a closed space.

Generally food poisoning takes about six to twelve hours to kick in. Hope that helps you figure out where it came from.

I was worried Monday when i got a bit of a stomach ache after some of the reports of food poisoning I'd heard at TAM. It cleared up pretty quickly, though, and I've felt fine since. I'm attributing it to the fact that I ate fried food and anything really fatty seems to always make my stomach feel a bit off ever since I had my gallbladder removed.

oh yeah I'm not really worried about where I picked it up. It caused me to miss a bit of tam, but I will say it was so wonderful that people stopped by to see me and ask how I was doing... and bring me gifts of cheesecloth wrapped lemons....(no they really did)

After talking to a number of people and seeing the responses here, I am pretty convinced there was some kind of foodborne illness served to us by the South Point.

The only common denominator I have found between the four I know of personally is the food served at lunch Saturday and the cookies served around 3PM on Saturday as well.

According to the Health department, the time it takes to fall ill varies from individual to individual but the 12 to 72 hour window is a fair guide. If you have not had symptoms after 72 hours, it would seem that you dodged the bullet.

For me it hit in about 36 to 40 hours. I had nausea and diarrhea but did not vomit. It seems like the people who actually vomited were able to recover faster.

My wife ate everything I ate with the exception of the cookies. I had oatmeal and she had chocolate chip and oddly, she did not fall ill.

Foodborne Illness Facts
● Foodborne illness is often called food poisoning.
● Foodborne illnesses can be caused by germs like bacteria, viruses, and parasites or by natural toxins or
chemicals.
● Germs need to grow in the digestive system before they can cause diarrhea.
● Food that caused the illness may have been eaten several days before the illness began.
● Many gastrointestinal illnesses, especially viral ones, are not caused by food or drink.
● The most common cause of diarrhea and vomiting is Norovirus. It is most often spread from person to
person, or by touching surfaces that have been contaminated with the virus.
● Salmonella bacteria usually require 12 – 72 hours after ingestion to cause illness.
● Many foodborne illnesses are short-lived and people recover without any medical treatment.

Strange. I get the opposite feeling. Just about everyone on this thread said they had no illness. And those that did, sounded more like a cold or flu - scratchy throat, etc.

I ate in two different restaurants at the South Point with no problems whatsoever. In any case if someone falls for digestive problems, it's hard to tell who or what is to blame for it.

And, not to argue with the august body of the State of Nevada (or Clark County) Health Department, but the four cases of foodborne illness I've suffered struck me within three to six hours, every time.

Maybe I just have a fast digestive system.

And I would have difficulty believing that any type of cookie was the carrier of a foodborne illness. Raw food, poorly conserved mayonnaise-based food, or improperly cooked meat seem far more likely culprits.

And I don't think you can blame even poorly washed salad greens for getting a cold...

Had a healthy portion of Saturday lunch and a big peanut butter cookie Saturday PM. No symptoms.
