Derek Acorah, TV medium, dies aged 69

Gord in Toronto (and everyone else): Ya... I know about Dr. Oz and a sad collection of paranormal and odd nutritional "experts" spun along from The Oprah Winfrey Show and her production company. If not for some still-there-is-life distribution support from Sony Pictures Television, I'm not sure you'd being seeing much Oz.

I'm not saying that money cannot be made (sadly) by aiming for naive and uneducated viewers --- but --- according to Broadcasting Cable the Dr. Oz show's ratings dropped more than 70 percent during a 5 year period from the 2011-2012 season to its 2017-2018 run. At the end of the 2012 season it averaged about 3.8 million and by 2018 it was down to about 1.1 million. It has bounced around over the past 15 months or so from just shy of a million to 1.3 million. Like the 1980-2010 psychic peddlers its golden years (and viewership from 3-4.5 million) are long gone.

Today its syndicated offerings are often in lesser time slots and with fewer stronger stations airing it. That isn't particularly good news for a 2022 or 2023 season when the far more factually accurate Gilligan's Island re-runs may still outpace it.

Sherlock. I bow to your greater knowledge and willingness to do the research.

I toddled off to Google "long island medium". And found this open-eyed report from someone who attended one of her shows.

https://www.nj.com/entertainment/2018/10/long_island_medium_theresa_caputo_njpac_newark_mid.html

A sample:

A woman raised her hand, and they were off to the races. Cameras follow Caputo and a screen on stage shows the action. One crew member who followed along had the sole job of passing out tissues.

But Caputo was off, right from the start, saying something about the woman's dad "passing from the chest" that the woman couldn't validate.

She moved on. "What about the mother figure?" she asked.

Another woman rose and was handed a microphone while the first woman stood there, hanging, waiting. She asked if that woman's mother had an issue with her legs. Nope.

It went on like this. Any time something was wrong for one person, it was right for someone else and that person stood up. Three mics got passed around. Caputo bounced around all night this way, talking as fast as an auctioneer, leading her own game of spiritual whack-a-mole.

That's a good write-up (thank you Gord for providing the link) on 'Long Island Medium ' Caputo. She's got one advantage. A very large population in her immediate area keeps even declining audiences viable enough to preserve a functioning profit base --- though at her upcharge for wine that may ultimately go sour if the economy turns down. Entertainment out for couples only goes so far --- even in Long Island. Plus she's old enough to retire. Age gets tough for lots of psychics (both male and female) as they pass 50.

But is this because people are turning away from such crap, or are they just leaving him to watch other similar crap?
Different crap, I'd say all this mindfulness crap and candles which smell of Paltrow's vaginia have taken over the magical thinking.
