I wouldn't mind the "old guy" comment if he had backed it up with evidence that Hatch was fading mentally.

Exactly. We can't make the jump from 'people tend to lose mental faculties as they age' to 'this person is old and therefore mentally insufficient'. To prove that for Hatch, one must actually address the actions and words of Hatch.
