Democrats post big gains in voter registration

Last I heard, the polsters were not calling cell phone users. My son, for instance, does not even have a land-line. How thoroughly they have sampled the under-30 demographic is, then, to be questioned.

Good point, Leftysergeant!

Pollsters adjust their results based on lots of factors, so they can certainly figure out how to compensate for underrepresentation of younger voters in their telephone surveys. Of course, the rub is that this is based on models of voting behavior that may or may not apply this time around. I still agree with Carville, though; if your plan involves getting lots of new people to vote, you're probably going to lose.

Yep. For example, some pollsters, like Rasmussen, will treat one young respondeant as if s/he were 4. Okay method, but lacking. Not the same as the real thing.

Also, these polls are generally given at night, when young people are generally out (5-9 PM). They're somewhere yammering on their cell phones ;)

Okaaaay... Pollster.com has, in the most recent polls, the race as follows:

Obama 48.0%
McCain 43.3%

The most recent poll for them was conducted on 9-6-08 (yesterday), so this is just as current as all the others.

Perhaps Pollster.com is taking the under 30 crowd into account by making cellphone calls? Does anyone know if this is what they do?

Wow, polls make me nuts. Did I mention they suck? :p

Do you really think McCain would've picked Palin if Obama had selected Clinton?

Yes actually. She would still be a good way to get the conservative base amped up, her youth would still get some notice with younger independants. and it's kinda hard for to old White guys to say they are real change when going up against a Black candidate and a woman.

And, it's going to be fun to watch.
Interesting, yes. Fun, no. Fun would be Obama by 10 points, with 61 senate seats.

Too much at stake to look at this as entertainment. I have draft age kids. I don't want to have to explain to my kids how we f'ed up the planet.
