No one noticed and there was no fanfare but about a month ago in a partisan vote democrats voted overwhelmingly to repeal the advance earned income credit. This was a lifeline for poor people athough admittedly few took advantage of it. The EIC did not go away people still will get it but they have to wait all year until they file their taxes.

This provision was hidden in the FAA Air Transportation Modernization and Safety Improvement Act

No, they love poor people. That's why they want to make more of them.

I never understood this EIC thing. I earned my income, so why don't I qualify?

So lets see. The Democrats voted to delay tax credits for a whole year until people people show that they have earned it. Goddam those fiscally irresponsible Democrats.

They'll get a bigger tax return and?

If you are truly poor having to wait for the refund can be difficult.

Of course it could happen that someone earns to much to qualify by the end of the year. Do people wait for other welfare until they see what their earnings for the current year are?

I don't really think the Democrats hate the poor. I doubt if many even understood this was in the bill. This was my "tongue in cheek" response to the Party of NO (R) Hates the Troops thread. OR one I remember from a few months ago where Republicans are in favor of rape, etc

For all I know this part was added by republicans

EIC is welfare?
Also, welfare programs require earnings information. If this is a welfare program, why should it not have this requirement.

It depends upon the definition of welfare. It is money given to lower income people as an incentive to work. A person who makes 20,000 and has 3qualifying children get over 5,000 dollars paid to them by the government for working.
I have had very little to do with other "welfare programs" but i am pretty sure they are based upon prior years income.
Earning information is required , the program has been in effect for probably 20 years and all of a sudden it is taken away and people who normally are interested in the welfare of poor people do not care.
I can imagine the outcry if this had been done 3 years ago.

To a person making 20,000 a year an extra 70 dollars in their biweekly paycheck can mean a lot. They still will eventually get the money but now they have to wait.

just like subsidiaries to the oil companies?
what does that have to do with the person who won't get that extra money in their paycheck.

EIC does require earnings information, not that that is actually relevant.

And yes - for those persons that receive a tax refund when they actually paid no taxes, EIC is welfare.

.. sure. But I think you'll find few people who worked that little to need to file but not yet pay taxes

As recently as 2004, 21 million families (at least 50 million Americans) received more than $35B. In fact, it is the single largest Welfare Program in America - in 2004 the EIC alone lifted more than 5 million families (12-15 million Americans) above the poverty level.

While the thread title is so slanted as to become inaccurate, it is interesting that the EIC really is a product of two Republican administrations.

I am thankful the money is there if I lose my job? (Speaking as that 20k person (OK 14k) who loses about 50 per check.)

The Earned Income Credit requires you to have earned income. Lose your income, and you lose the EIC. Of course, there are other welfare safety nets to provide for the unemployed.

I'm not sure why Republicans are so upset over this. Since when do they care about poor people?

Excellent use of talking points.

Of course, some independent, objective research would have led you to the conclusion that the EITC is largely the result of Republican work.

And your point is? The Republican party has devolved since then into a frothing, extremist party of haters.
