The USA's largest Marxist organisation, Democratic Socialists of America has consistently supported Barack Obama-particularly through its influential Chicago branch.

But as Ronald Reagan famously said of the Ku Klux Klan "just because they support me, that doesn't mean I support them."

While Obama has mixed with DSA members for many years, socially and politically, he has only occasionally been publicly identified with DSA sponsored events.

Obama makes an apparent, if obscure reference to DSA in his 1995 autobiography "Dreams From My Father".

Discussing his time studying political science at New York's Columbia University, in the early 80s, Obama reveals that he"went to socialist conferences at Cooper Union and African cultural fairs in Brooklyne.”

In 1988 Obama left Chicago to study at Harvard Law School.

He returned in 1992 and in 1996 he ran for Illinois State Senate with the endorsement of DSA.

That endorsement was partially earned by Obama's performance at a DSA sponsored forum held at Chicago University in early 1996.

Though it should be noted that the DSA is not specifically Marxist, and it regularly endorses left Democrats as it is not a separate political party. I've actually been seeing about joining them (Hey, only two people replied to my thread about the one thing that could stop me and make me a Libertarian, and one of them was a paulbot :p ).

Wow. You probaly don"t even know what socialism means. When has Obama said that he will start privatizing american companies? Last time I checked he still supports capitalism.

The polls are way off. Most of those who will vote against Obama will not participate in the polling interview, they will hangup or say they do not want to answer the questions. I saw a CNN political map recently showing which states lean to Obama and which states lean to McCain. Most of the southern states were shown going for Obama. That will never happen.

Obama will lose like McGovern.

I haven't heard of any maps like that. Both RealClearPolitics and FiveThirtyEight's graphs incidicate that the only Southern States that Obama would win if the election were held today is Virginia, (and that's marked as a particularly close win) although with current poll data he still wins by a decent margin even if he were to lose that. (Obama does hope to be able to gain more votes in the South (among other things, even if you're right that the south has a lot of racists, it also has a lot of black people) but all polls have shown there is that he's not as hopeless as he otherwise would be.)

(That is, if by southern you mean states that were part of the Confederacy. Colorado and New Mexico are looking like they could rather easily swing over to Obama's side.)

Well, if you want to make a bet on the outcome, I'd be willing to give you incredibly good odds. How about if I'm correct (and Obama is nominated) I get to choose your avatar for a week, and if you're correct (and Hillary gets nominated) you get to choose my avatar for a year. Sound fair to you?
