Deepak Chopra backs ID!!!

It's nice to see a famous person acknowledge that evolution occurred and that ID isn't science even if that person does mess up on some of the details but at the same time it kinda galls me to see Bill Maher pretending to be Mr. Science when he's a believer in so many silly things (John Edward-types, ghosts, astrology). Or at least he used to believe in them.

he believes in evolution AND in astrology? wonder how he reconciles them?

anyway, thanks for that post, i used it to great hilarity on my friends.

One doesn't have to rule out the other, unless you know some central tenant of either that I don't know about.

I know tons of people who believe in the historical fact of human evolution that also think that stars make them lucky on wednesdays or whatever.

what i meant and didn't articulate clearly is that people who believe in woo, generally go woo all the way. and people who believe in science are smart enough to question the woo.

he seemed remarkably scientific to me in his diatribe, and it didn't seem to have formed in the mind of someone who could believe in any sort of woo.

but what do i know? i am no psychology expert.

I don't agree. I think that most people have woo somewhere in their mind. Only dedicated skeptics look around the corners of their brain and fish out irrationality.

Just because you accept as fact one area of science doesn't make you a dedicated skeptic.

Plenty of people who are afraid of the number 13 nevertheless accept the germ theory of disease, for example.

Plenty of scientists hold supernatural beliefs despite their adherance to natural causes for the subjects they study.

Heck, the Pope accepts evolution. He also believes that every year some vial of 500 year old blood reliquifies in a miracle.

People are funny, funny creatures.

Well, we are mammals as well. Somewhere, you gotta draw the line. :p

Glass of milk
Standing in between extinction in the cold
and explosive radiating growth
So the warm blood flows
Through the large four-chambered heart
Maintaining the very high metabolism rate they have

Mammal, mammal
Their names are called
They raise a paw
The bat, the cat
Dolphin and dog
Koala bear and hog

One of us might lose his hair
But you're reminded that it once was there
From the embryonic whale to the monkey with no tail
So the warm blood flows
with the red blood cells lacking nuclei
Through the large four-chambered heart
Maintaining the very high metabolism rate they have

Mammal, mammal
Their names are called
They raise a paw
The bat, the cat
Dolphin and dog
Koala bear and hog

Placental the sister of her brother Marsupial
Their cousin called Monotreme
Dead uncle Allotheria

Mammal, mammal
Their names are called
They raise a paw
The bat, the cat
Dolphin and dog
Koala bear and hog
The fox, the ox
Giraffe and shrew
Echidna, caribou

Wanna bet? You don't get to be Pope by being a big dummy. That'll only get you as far as becoming President of the USA.

I've been led to the woo by friends I've trusted, but it's temporary. When you live in a world of woo you're bound to pick up some -- you can't check out everything.
