Just needed a laugh to lighten my day:

"ORLANDO, Fla. -- A federal drug agent shot himself in the leg during a gun safety presentation to children and his bosses are investigating.

The Drug Enforcement Administration agent, whose name was not released, was giving a gun safety presentation to about 50 adults and students organized by the Orlando Minority Youth Golf Association, witnesses and police said.

He drew his .40-caliber duty weapon and removed the magazine, according to the police report. Then he pulled back the slide and asked someone in the audience to look inside the gun and confirm it wasn't loaded, the report said.

Witnesses said the gun was pointed at the floor and when he released the slide, one shot fired into the top of his left thigh.

"The kids screamed and started to cry," said Vivian Farmer, who attended the presentation with her 13-year-old nephew.
..........."

Well at least he didn't shoot a kid.

Well, at least the demo was successful:
"Everyone was pretty shaken up," Farmer said. "But the point of gun safety hit home. Unfortunately, the agent had to get shot. But after seeing that, my nephew doesn't want to have anything to do with guns."

Reminds me of a story I saw in the newspaper a few years back, where a brilliant gun owner was playing with his toy in front of his teeneage children and some of their friends. When the kids complained, he said something to the effect of "Relax. It's not loaded. If it was, would I do this?" And then he put the gun in his mouth and improved the human race.

Thank you Colonel Cooper:

Rule 1 Guns are loaded. all guns, always

Rule 2 Never let the muzzle cover anything you're not willing to destroy.

Both stories may have violated rules 3 & 4, but this is enough.

You know, we hear stories like this from time to time. "Dumbass Yahoo Gets Grizzly Comeuppance." My first reaction to this story was mild amusement, but that lasted about a split second. Then I pictured the scene in my mind, with his children right there, the tremendous damage that the gunshot must have done to his face and head, the amount of blood...

...and then I imagined the sound of the body falling to the floor, the screams of the children a split second later (who will probably by psychologically screwed up for the rest of their lives), etc... And I realized that this is really a very disturbing and grotesque tale*.

*Evolver's story, not the thread topic

2 basic rules of gun safety:

Always check the chamber to make sure it's unloaded.

Always assume any gun you pick up is loaded.

If you can do those 2 things you shouldn't end up shot in the leg or face.

Here is all the gun safety training a kid needs:

"IF YOU FIND A GUN, FIND AN ADULT AND TELL THEM IMMEDIATELY!"

Yet more evidence we need to get rid of the DEA.

But this happened in Orlando. I've spent alot of time in Orlando. If you had told me about this without saying where, I would have guessed Orlando. Go to Orlando.....you'll see!!

This happens with the cops all the time. It doesn't always make the news. This should stick in the minds of those people who think only the military and law enforcement should have guns.

Do you think this officer will be charged with the crime of discharging a firearm within the city?? Nope, nope, and nope.

If it was a civilian, they would confiscate his gun, and throw him in jail for child endangerment. There is always a double standard with the cops and THEIR guns.

This boob needs his gun, and badge taken away.

I agree.

Now, please answer my question. Do you support gay marriage?

I've seen more than a few weapons clearing barrels over the years, but never one without a hole in it somewhere (or in the nearby wall, ceiling, etc.).

Just more confirmation for Deming's tenet #10...all the exhortations, and slogans, and '100% Safety' posters in the world aren't going to prevent mishaps and problems by themselves. Not even for federal agencies.

On the other hand, in public? In front of a group of kids? And asking someone else to check for a round after giving a safety lecture?

Ouch!!

When I read your reply I had a weird thought that involved gay men and guns. If gay marriage was legal, and you caught your young son (14-16 years old) having sex with an older man. Would you force them to marry?

Charlie (yee ha Cletus, a shotgun wedding) Monoxide

PS And you lived in West Virginia ...

Well, Cletus, if it was West Virginia, then chances are you would be the older man in bed with your son...

Why is the Orlando Minority Youth Golf Association having a gun safety demo??? I dont recall my Little League having cooking classes.

I went to the DEA museum in DC. Man that place was a hoot. I winder why we have a DEA and the ATF + FBI + ect.. Do we need to be so redundant?

When I attended my first weapons safety training program (NRA) the instructur told a story of another instructur who had killed himself demonstrating an "unloaded" gun during a training course. He gave us the same rules.
