Cynthia McKinney outlines Green Party goals
CHICAGO -- As Green Party members gather here to select a presidential nominee and try to turn their progressive activism into an established spot on the nation's ballots, they'll also be trying to raise some green to defray the costs of their political convention.

Party officials were forced to turn to some of their members last month for a no-interest loan of up to $15,000 to help pay for the convention, which began Thursday and runs through Saturday.

Four candidates are vying for the nomination, with former U.S. Rep. Cynthia A. McKinney (D-Ga.) in the lead. She holds 304.5 of the 419 delegates needed.
. . .
She said achieving 5% of the vote, a threshold in many states for gaining status as an established political party, was a "very concrete goal" of her candidacy.

As a congresswoman, McKinney had her share of controversies, including a scuffle with Capitol Police. She was elected to Congress in 1992, lost a bid for reelection in 2002, regained her seat in 2004 and lost the 2006 primary.

In her campaign, she is pushing for the impeachment of President Bush and a quick end to the Iraq war. She also advocates a human rights plan that includes reform of the nation's voting system and slavery reparations for African Americans.
A potential threat to Obama?
Will any significant numbers of African Americans back her on reparations, something Obama is, obviously, not for?

Personlly, I suspect she'll not even do as well as Nader, and that neither of them alone of combined will make a difference in any state. But you never know. If you have another close state like Florida in 2000, even a few hundred votes could swing it.

Maybe I'm missing something, but that link seems to say that if she is elected president (and Bush is no longer president) she will then impeach Bush and remove him from the presidency.

Well, this is the same woman who thinks Paris and Africa are countries, so I wouldn't be surprised.

The Green Party jumped the shark back in 2000,when it advocated "worker control" (ie, Nationaliszation) of all business's making over 100'000 dollars a year in profit ...and stated that was only a first step. A friend of mine who had been a Green Party supporter because of enviromental issues quit after that.
Mckinney is a joke, and will have no impact on the election whatsoever.
The whole slavery repratations issue is a non starter, and few blacks take it seriously.

You've said this before, but there's absolutely nothing like "worker control" in the 2000 Green Party Platform. They have strong stances on labor and against corporate personhood and whatnot, but nothing that goes quite that far. Maybe it's something they said more coyly, and perhaps you've already answered this question so I apologize in advance for bothering you, but it would be really nice if you have any evidence of them making this position. Although if it's just second-hand through your friend that's understandable.

Yeah, I'm unfamiliar with the GP having such a platform. Being a member, I think someone would at least drop me a note.

I wonder if dudalb might be thinking of the Greens/Green Party USA, which is a different, much smaller, and rather more radical group than "the" Green Party of the United States, which is the "real" Green Party.

I am pretty sure you are mixing them up with The Greens, a smaller, more radical party.

But even then, worker control doesn't mean nationalization.

I problem did mean the Green Party, USA.
But The mainstream Green Party is making a mistake, then, by choosing someone as kooky as McKinney, particulalry with her history of borderline Anti Semitism and wild statements.

But it will be good for comedians! She could be the Badnarik of 2008.

Well, of all the people running, she was kinda the best. Of course, that is a very relative term :p .

AFAIK, the "craziest" thing McKinney is advocating is reparations. It's nowhere near the level of arguing for the "right" to personally own thermonuclear weapons (a la Badnarik).

But fear not - the Libertarians are running Bob Barr, who's nuttier than a pistachio farm.

This was from the Chicago Sun-Times:
Four candidates remain in the race for the party's nomination for president but McKinney has the lion's share of the the delegates and appears to have the nomination locked up.

One workshop Thursday offers "A Clear Path Towards Dismantling and Ending All "ism" (Racism, sexism, classism and white privilege) within the Green Party by 2012."
"A Clear Path Towards Dismantling and Ending All 'ism'..."

Of course, you all remember that familiar mantra they taught you when you were a kid: "You can't spell 'white privilege' without I-S-M..."

And if they intend to end all "ism", does that include Hinduism?
Environmentalism?
Capitalism?
Judaism?
Atheism?

Question: If the Greenies wanted to nominate a whackjob defeated former Georgia Congressman, why didn't they nominate Bob Barr?

C'mon, that is so boring. The "isms" referred to are the isms of oppression, like ageism, sexism, etc.

If you really want to make them look bad, you should quote these parts:

But party members also seem a bit more controversial on some issues. They are set to hold their national convention here starting Thursday, expected to nominate as their candidate for president former U.S. Rep. Cynthia McKinney, D-Ga., who has argued that President Bush knew in advance about the 9-11 attacks.

They also have workshops scheduled on such issues as "The 60th Anniversaries of the Palestinian Catastrophe (Nakba) and the U.N. Universal Declaration of Human Rights." That refers to the founding of Israel.

Don't forget she's also a 9-11 "Truther". She's guaranteed to be a source of hilarity on the campaign trail, provided the media pay any attention to her.

She's not, really. She called for an investigation to find out who in the Bush Administration might have known in advance - an investigation that Congress did wind up conducting. This was spun by a lot of people to say that she accused the administration of complicity, but that's not really what happened.

Yeah, her rhetoric was over-the-top, but it's not accurate to call her a "Truther" in the vein of Alex Jones & Co.

Stop it! I'm sick and tired of the ism schism.
