Hey all,
I just ran across this story via an email from a friend at work and wanted to know what the consensus was here on the jref boards. I couldn't find anything with the search function so I thought I'd post it.

Legit or fake? Judging from the story I would say legit, however I'm obviously skeptical of the news source as well as the picture. The eye just doesn't look like the eye of a cartilaginous fish such as a shark or ray. The eye looks human, and the socket itself shows no transition from a double socket to a single socket or anything like that. Dorsal fin seems to look like a match compared to this other Juvi dusky shark pic:

Am I late to the party? Has this been discussed and thoroughly debunked and or confirmed?

While hardly a definitive source on the matter, Cracked.com did cover that about a month ago, and say what you will about Cracked, they do at least provide links to their sources. Here's one:

Could be due to a rare mutation called holoprosencephaly, according to the article.

ETA: There is a Mexican scientist whose specialty is sharks who has admitted to examining and studying the animal; he claims it's real. The guy's name is Dr. Felipe Galvan, from the Centro Interdisciplinario de Ciencias del Mar (CICIMAR). I would imagine he could be contacted to confirm or deny the Cracked article and the existence of the animal.

Can't comment on whether this specific one is real but I've seen several examples of that sort of cyclopic developmental defect and this looks consistent with that. You get that when the bilateral symmetry divide doesn't 'go off' all the way. Typically the brain's also extremely underdeveloped. You could easily get a 'human' looking eye that's just a badly underdeveloped and partly divided or undivided eye.
 
Cyclopic develomental deffect... Prejudice, sheer anti-monocular prejudice.

Well, there are one eyed lawyers, car salesmen and money lenders.
So why not a one eyed shark ?

Yeah, it's kind of weird. Cracked covered it pretty well, with plenty of links and references, showing that it's clearly real. Yet suddenly it's been popping up all over the place in the last couple of days, pretty much all with just the one photo and virtually no attempt to go into more detail. When Cracked is the most reliable and up to date news source around, something's really gone very wrong.

You ain't kidding. But then, haven't we all been complaining about the lack of real news in the "news" these days? At least there's one place that offers somewhat up-to-date info.

The fact that it's a humor website non-withstanding, of course.
