A female police detective specializing in Internet crime shows the dangers of Internet chat rooms. She entered a chat room, posing as a 14-year-old girl. After just a few seconds, a number of individuals made contact. The strangers asked such questions as: “Where are you from?” “Are you a girl or a boy?” “Can we talk?” [...]

People who want to meet hot female police detectives are going to read this article and then enter chat rooms and scout out the users who claim to be 14-year-old girls. They'll be pretty disappointed when they find out that lots of the users who claim to be 14-year-old girls are, in fact, 14-year-old girls.

Is a chat room and a forum such as this one the same, similar or different, and why do you so say?

Somehow, I don't think that philosophy and critical thinking are topics of interest for either hebephiles (13 would not be a pre-pubescent child), pedophiles, or teens. Most teens seem to actually go after the opposite it seems....

What is the solution???

Umm... I don't know... how about BE A DIETY-DAMNED PARENT!. Educate, prepare, monitor, and involve yourself. Don't let your TV or a computer be a baby-sitter. I am sick and tired of everyone wanting to do everything in their power to isolate children from the realities of the world. Why do you think that teenagers and college students are so stupid, and maturity is taking longer and longer to reach in society? Discussing "bad" things with kids honestly and openly "corrupt" their minds. Not acknowledging these things doesn't make them go away. It just makes them ignorant and less prepared for when they *do* have to face them.

Or maybe it's just that the parents in this country are basically sheltered children themselves, and are incapable of doing so?

No dung. My wife bought my daughter a "Teen People" (daughter is starting to become interested in clothes) and it was full of woo crap. An article about a 15-year-old "medium", horoscope nonsense on almost every page, etc. and ad nauseum.

Just as an FYI, our police academy runs an ongoing training course in how to find and infiltrate these pedophile chats, and set up "dates" for subsequent arrests.

There have been a number of well-publicized arrests in the area.
