I am not a Face-book user, but I do use the slightly more serious LinkedIn. I have noticed an interesting effect:
When I get a new connection, I usually run through that person's connection list to see if there is anybody I know or would otherwise want to link to.
It seems a lot of people do the same, and this generates an interesting effect: It seems that my connections reached a sort of critical mass some time ago, and I'm now receiving quite a few more invitations than I send out myself. If connection were spreading arithmetically, this would be inevitable, but obviously, connections will soon spread to circles that have never heard of you, and the growth should stop.
My present network looks like this:
Direct connections: 106
Two degrees away: 13,400
Three degrees away: 1,278,100
What are your experiences with this and other social media?
