VIDEO: Deputy Fatally Shoots 88-Year-Old Retired Police Sergeant During Welfare Check
An 88-year-old retired Tampa police sergeant was fatally shot by a Hillsborough sheriff’s deputy during a welfare check at his home Tuesday morning (video below).
Retired Tampa Police Sergeant Ronald Ehrich, a widower living on his own, was very hard of hearing and “had to read your lips” if he wasn’t wearing his hearing aids, his friend, Angel Ortiz, told the Tampa Bay Times.
...
If the retired police sergeant didn’t have his hearing aids in, he likely couldn’t hear the deputy and probably thought she was a home intruder, Ortiz told the Tampa Bay Times.

Serves him right for being hard of hearing inside his own home
It's almost never that you'll find me coming down on the side of the cops but, taking the circumstances immediately before she fired into consideration, one wonders what would have happened if she hadn't.
You have to bear in mind this was cop mentality -V- cop mentality - a sure fire recipe for disaster.

When he announced he had a gun, she could have removed herself from the situation until backup arrived. That way, it could have been approached in a less stressful manner for all involved. She knew he was alive at that point, so allowing the situation to deescalate before proceeding sounds like the better option.
More like a recipe for comedy.
Excellent point, although I'm not sure that hearing a voice would have sealed the deal on it being him. The only way to be sure was to get eyes on and 'ol sarge was gunnin' for the old days.
Whenever I see these kinds of narratives, my mind immediately goes to the actual frequencies. Traffic stops/police interactions totals. Amount of times these escalate to situations like this.
Much like police shootings of suspects, it is such a small fraction that while terrible, does not represent the risk portrayed. I especially hate the mindset that is instilled in police because of these fringe incidents. The overall risk is minuscule, not matter how graphic the exceptions.

The officer deserved to be shot for participating in modern-day slave patrols.
A strong take, but I won't argue.
Post-January 6th, the right wing really doesn't hide their hatred for law enforcement anymore.
Kingsville, Texas officer Sherman Otto Benys was shot and killed while responding to a domestic dispute call.
Henry County, Georgia officer Paramhans Desai was shot and killed while responding to a domestic dispute call.
Jackson County Deputy Lena Nicole Marshall was shot and killed while responding to a domestic dispute call.
No pizza delivery boys or convenience store clerks were harmed in any of the shootings.
A strong take, but I won't argue.
Holley joined the Police Department in 2019, at the age of 37. In a 2020 interview with the website Insider, Holley said she joined the department to help change officers’ relationship with the community.
“I feel like Baltimore city police officers have a bad name about themselves,” she said. “And we have to change that — and change it together.”

Bogative said:My stance on how people who violently attack police officers with potentially deadly force is straightforward and does not waiver based on the perpetrators politics or ethnicity. They should be met with deadly force. Based on the videos I watched a month ago I would estimate there should've been about a dozen more body bags dragged out of the Capitol on January 6.
