What I mean, for example, is where the dead man wrote GIFT in his own blood. One of the suspects was named "Sy. M. Hide" and GIFT is German for "poison"

Of course Sy probably would have been known as "Poison" anyway, but no one questions the other suspects.

I used to watch Forensic Files, and there were sometimes the smallest bits of evidence, trivial really, that would lead to the killer.

I'd put this more in the realm of forensics than trivia

This sort of thing seems to be more in the realm of fictional murder mysteries than real-life murders. And even there, I'd argue that forensics is a better word for it than trivia. It's trivial until it becomes an important clue, and then it's evidence.
