Marvel Frozen posted about an AOL poll, I would be interested in the results of a similar poll on here. While I did not see the original poll, I have added one or 2 extra options to it to give a greater choice than simply yes or no.

For the record, I belive in Evolution.

1. Creation Theory - earth created only a few thousand years ago
2. Evolution - life happens
3 - Divine being created life and guides it.
4- Life happened and was shaped and guided by a god or other outside influence.
5 . Other

I've seen the evidence that supports the T of E. I've seen no evidence that supports Creationism.

As sexy and charismatic as Kent Hovind may be, he hasn't convinced me of his views.

You infidels! The Universe was sneezed out of the nose of the Great Green Arkleseezure! Fear the Coming of the Great White Handkerchief!

I voted "Other" because there was no Planet X option.

But seriously, I teach some rudiments of evolution in introductory psych and deal with the creation "science" vs evolution in critical thinking and some students ask things like one did last week.
"But sir, how could such complex things such as ourselves result from a random process? Surely, there must be a God (I think he was referring to the Allah version, rather than the beta version of the +ians) who designed us."
"It could be that she just got the experiment rolling and will be back later to see what happened."

Do that make me a Sheist? Hal's a deist.

Evolution.

But this should not be a matter of faith.

So far, there´s no scientific alternative and I have not heard of any work being done to establish one.
What is left is to strengthen the theory.

I think the Sociobologists sabotage the theory by their "Just So" stories.
Reference , S.J.Gould

95% evolution (includes my vote).
This means we are quite different from the AOL group. I bet you knew that before you posted the poll.

Don't forget that Creationists come in multiple flavors; Old Earth vs. Young Earth, those who favor divine "periodic maintainence" vs. those who think He just got the ball rolling and uses Evolution as a process of "self-correction".

My vote: non-theistic Evolution. There's no evidence for the Creationists aside from trying to poke holes in the Evolution evidence.

Much less is there any evidence for "God".

To say refutation of Evolution is "proof" of Creation is as absurd as going into a biology class, refuting Genesis point-for-point and saying I've proved Evolution.

my favorite is my friend who says that the earth was made to look old in seven days(won't commit on 24hr interval=day)

Jeff,
As much as I like S.J Gould,I think his critique of evolutionary psychology&sociobiology was rather weak.
He did admit though, that even in his opinion it has something to give.

And there is no creation "theory",while creationism there is.

Evolution.

However, in the spirt of clear thinking I do have some issues with you poll.

1. Creation Theory - earth created only a few thousand years ago
2. Evolution - life happens
3. Divine being created life and guides it.
4. Life happened and was shaped and guided by a god or other outside influence.
5. Other

Items 1, 3, 4, and 5 essentially say that some superior life is responsible for life on Earth. Therefore, since these terms are redunant, I would drop them.

I hope this helps!

OK - what smartarse voted outside influence?

That would be me. Well, I voted that half-jokingly. I mean, we're a couple hundred years from travelling to other planets and colonizing new worlds and new star systems. What if we discovered some primitive species on these new worlds? Chances are we'd leave them alone or fashion them to our liking. Wouldn't it be cool if the latter happened here, billions of years ago? I'm wishful thinking here. :)

I assume you were just trying for a nice sound bite,

but viruses require a host cell. If the virus comes from outerspace, where does it's host cell come from?

Indeed, it's thought that while viruses are more simple than most (if not all, but there are some fairly complex viruses and some very simple bacteria as well as other very simple microbes. besides, complex is a very subjective term) life forms they probably arose from life forms, i.e. after them. Perhaps as the result of a mutated plasmid or the like.

I think evolution is by far and away the most logical explanantion (Duh). With one caveat: it seems to me that Catastrophic Evolution may make more sense than gradual.
