Craigslist 'censures' adult ads in the USA

In a move sure to make the fundies smile, Craigslist has censured it's adult services tab in the USA.

Craigslist was expected to have earned an estimated $36 million from advertising associated with its Adult Services section in 2010

Wow, that's a pretty nice cash cow to have to slaughter for a hamburger.

There's no indication that Craigslist has removed its Adult Services section for good, however. Although links to the site are now eliminated when accessing the main Craigslist page from an IP addressed based in the United States, one can still pull up the page from other countries.

Of course proxy users can still access the pages from overseas, but there wont be any local girls/guys for rent.

Are there any non-USA governments trying to do the same thing?

My point is, that those same folks who want to wrap themselves in the flag, "take our country back", and worship the bible/constitution, are perfectly happy to toss out the parts of the first amendment that they don't like.

Craiglist is a private company. It can demand tomorrow that everybody post in Esperanto and sell nothing but bibles and it would have absolutely no effect on the first amendment. It simply doesn't apply to private organizations.

If the government censored Craiglist, now that would've been a problem.

May I point that these adds advertise an activity which is illegal. It i not surprising if Craiglist is not wanting these once they have felt the heat due to recent publicity. Not advertising illegal activities is not what we usually term censorship.

BTW, I personally believe that the law should not determine what two consenting adults are doing, as long as no one gets hurt, but this beside the point.

Actually, threats from the FBI tend to count as sufficient pressure to consider a behavior forced. If a private company is (almost literally) doing something at gunpoint then it can hardly be considered to have done so of its own volition.

You've got a point indeed. But what is the FBI threatening? To kidnap and kill them? No. To prosecute them for helping to solicit prostitution (or the equivalent). It is long been held that soliciting for illegal acts, e.g., prostitution, is not covered under the first amendment.

Yet newspapers continue to host the same kinds of ads, and have never been threatened. I just checked my local paper's online classifieds, and there are dozens of thinly disguised prostitution ads.

All this will do is make it harder to buy something else. Soon there will be a code for prostitution ads in other sections, and I'll have to apologize to one hooker after another because I really did want to buy a used lawn mower.

Is advertising for prostitution a 1st amendment right.
The fundies as you call them were exercising their first amendment rights. You would want to throw away their 1st amendment rights.

And what is wrong with not wanting your 13 year old child to see ads for prostitution on Craigslist.
i believe it should be legal but not advertised where minors can see it.

If the authorities used that information without CL changing its privacy policy then it absolutely would be.

An excellent interview with one of the Attorney's General. The interviewer really held his feet to the fire. His argument? Human trafficking and child prostitution. His evidence? Zilch. He was asked if he was going after personal ads in papers and various other publications that list escorts ads. His answer? No.
