My thinking is that modern equates to democratic, first-world economy.

Russia, India and Singapore are definitely democratic.

How do you decide what 'constitutes a 'first world' economy? Singapore has a very strong economy. Russia's is improving greatly, and India has a strong middle class.

Russia is most definitely not a democracy.

Have you followed what´s going on in there for the last few years? President Putin is not informally called "Tsar Vladimir" for nothing.

And don´t get me started on Chechnya...

I know!

Let's make a list of modern countries with large minority populations because their grandparents survived the 1940s.

How about a list of countries starting with the letter..."U"!

Hey, that's a not a my ganda. That's a Uganda.

But I'm glad you responded in a lighthearted matter to my post, which was to point out that making lists of countries with this or that is a bit of a parlor game. Every country sucks in some way or another. Because if one didn't, a lot of people would move there. Unless they had lousy immigration policies, which would make them suck.
