Is that why Dems are calling for his resignation as well? Is that why the GOP called for Larry Craig to resign?

Dems are calling for Weiner to resign because they are wimps.

Did the GOP call for Larry Craig to resign? If so, why did they not call for Vitter to resign or for Ensign to resign? I'll tell you why,m because Larry Craig's "crime" involved gay stuff.

Everyone's overlooking the real crime here, which is the total unsexiness of the photos. If you're going to have a scandal, at least have the photos be worth looking at. Boring, boring stuff.

The problem with scandals is that they are invariably mundane and banal. Can't we have a real scandal? Full frontally nude girls and boys, and murders, and whores, and piles of cash and coke and treasonous dealings with foreign powers? Now that's worth reading about.

I'm working on it...

But it's interesting that you bring up driving issues, given that Weiner is actually quite notable for his hypocrisy on parking tickets. Does that hypocrisy bother you?

I would say that hypocrisy is a necessary but not sufficient condition for these "scandals" and for condemning a public person.

Let me be clear, though, this has lowered my opinion of Weiner. If he was up against a candidate in a primary that expressed 100% similar political views, and there were no substantive other issues to separate them, I would go for the non-cheater over the cheater. That criteria, however, is FAR down the list. I would rather have a philanderer who supported a woman's right to choose than a straight-laced anti-choicer.

We are all hypocrits to some degree, especially behaviorally. It is literally impossible to live a life that falls fully in line with the world as you'd like it to be.

But like lies, hypocrisy can be more or less meaningful. Parking tickets, I would propose, are less meaningful than Civil Rights for homosexuals, for example.

Take a guy like Bill Bennett: moral crusader, sanctimonious blowhard, has a problem with gambling. That doesn't really bother me that much. It means I ignore all of his sputtering nonsense about morality, but I did that before I learned he was a gambling addict. I don't think that hypocrisy bars him from public life (although a gambling addiction, depending on how it's expressed, can be an obviously dangerous habit for a legislator).

And how she moves forward is her choice and her choice alone.

Yes, of course. I certainly don't mean to imply otherwise. This would apply even if he had actually slept with any of the women he chatted with.

I possibly confused your position with others. Do you think he should resign?

I think it would be the honorable thing to do at this point, but unless something significantly more damaging comes out (like sexting with underage girls), then I can't say I care all that much. He may be on the verge of losing his seat anyways with the coming redistricting.

There is one thing I will agree with you on: Weiner has forever lost the ability to have is moral outrage taken seriously.

Mark your calendar: we found common ground! :D

I think the point is pretty clear that your claim that the GOP has made this a big deal is because he is a progressive is false. He's brought condemnation from both sides, as has scandals by members of the GOP.

REALLY?! Why is Vitter still in office then?

Not every scandal results in resignations. The fact that Vitter is still in office doesn't change the fact that your claim is false.

Vitter actually broke laws, yet is still in office and received a standing ovation from the GOP when he returned to office. This is evidence that my claim is absolutely true.

No, it isn't. It's evidence that Vitter was treated in a partisan manner. That isn't evidence that Weiner is.

The "at least he's not a hypocrite" defense has rather two serious (and related) deficiencies. The first is that the very premise isn't one that democrats should want voters to take seriously, because it basically broadcasts that democrats are the party of no morals. And yes, this is a moral issue, because he's a married man and this was NOT, by his own admission, a victimless offense. The second is that Weiner and other democrats who similarly stray from marital vows are hypocrites. Every politician in the country takes the position that stable families are a bedrock of American life. There is no party, and no politician, which adopts the platform that cheating on your spouse is OK.

So the Rushblob is not to be taken seriously and Larry Craig and Diapers Vitter and that fat-faced blithering idiot Newt have no place in the Republicon Party. Crystal clear.

It is, however, proof that the Republicons accept lawless perverts as long as they toe the party line.
