"Boston University history professor Brendan McConville said, 'Basically when Paul Revere was stopped by the British, he did say to them, ‘Look, there is a mobilization going on that you’ll be confronting,’ and the British are aware as they’re marching down the countryside, they hear church bells ringing — she was right about that — and warning shots being fired. That’s accurate." ~ From the Boston Herald
And Cornell law professor William Jacobson writes:
". . . Revere did in fact tell the British that the colonial militias, who had been alerted, were waiting for them . . . Palin's short statement on the video was less than clear; that sometimes happens but the part of the statement which has people screaming -- that Revere warned the British that the colonial militias were waiting -- appears to be true."
Should have read those links better. Palin said, and I quote, "He who warned, uh, the…the British that they weren’t gonna be takin’ away our arms, uh, by ringin’ those bells and um by makin’ sure that as he’s ridin’ his horse through town to send those warnin’ shots and bells that uh we were gonna be secure and we were gonna be free…and we were gonna be armed."
While it's true that there was bell ringing and shooting, neither of those were done by Revere. And he didn't ride to warn the British - he was riding to warn American militia leaders, and only mentioned that he'd done so to the British after being captured. Otherwise he wouldn't have warned the British about
anything. Revere also said nothing to the British about taking away arms, or about security or freedom.
So, really, the only part about Palin's statement that was correct was that Paul Revere rode, there were British involved, and that there were bells and guns (though Revere wasn't involved in that part). In short, Palin heard the actual story while on the historical tour, then when asked about it by the press, mangled it almost (but not entirely) completely.
EDIT: Thunder's right, any discussion of this belongs in the other thread.
