I was scouring New Zealand news for something interesting to do with alternative medicine and I found this video from the Breakfast morning show down here. It's not very long, but it features a professor - from one of New Zealand's universities - talking about a book he wrote on complementary therapies for cancer.

Here is a link about the professor featured in the interview.

I was just wandering if anyone has read this guy's book because it seems like he's just trying to pass on factual information about therapies to help people cope with cancer.

Enjoy! ;)

I was in the doctor's surgery for another reason this morning and noticed a poster advertising an 'Aromatherapy for Cancer' session.

At first I thought 'what a bloody waste of money' but having thought about it there may be some benefit to the sufferers in terms of 'feeling a bit better' rather than any medical effect.

Didn't realise the NHS was funding aromatherapy though.

As far as I can tell from his website, Shaun Holt seems intent on promoting his books.

Right now, the guy seems genuine to me. I'll have to go and find a copy somewhere to look through it (I can't imagine ever buying it though).

Soapy Sam has promoted the concept of "hairdressing therapy". I think it's entirely legitimate to give sufferers from serious chronic disease sessions of enjoyable, relaxing activity that enhances their "feel-good" quotient. I just think it's a pity some people have to pretend that the equivalent of a hairdo or a nice cup of tea has actual therapeutic effects.

I've read about video games specifically designed to take the minds of people in severe pain off the pain. A game called "Snow-world" for patients with severe burns, for example. It's field that has a lot of potential, but the woos seem intent on monopolising it.

Rolfe.

That actually sounds really cool. :) I can imagine that sort of game for people suffering from burns to actually help them feel better and take their mind off of the pain.

The use of alternative therapies for the purpose of reducing suffering is probably one of the only LEGITIMATE purposes for such things. The problem lies in such remedies being pushed as ALTERNATIVES to genuine medical therapy for cancer TREATMENT.

TAM:)
