I know a few Communists and Socialists. They spend endless amounts of energy complaining and whining about Capitalism, the rich, socio-economic disparities, ect. etc.

And yet..they seem to spend very LITTLE time gaining new skills, improving their lives, going back to school, taking courses.

Why is that? Why do these folks tend to have a great sense of entitlement, that the government and society OWES them...but they don't think they should have to take on any personal responsibility..and try to make their own lives better?

Are they just lazy? Do they just have motivation problems? Or do they prefer to blaim other folks for their failures, and refuse to accept that they are somewhat responsible for their lot in life, and REFUSE to accept that maybe they can make their lives better?

So your critique of communism and socialism is a vague ad hominem attack on some guys you know?

I'm a socialist with a bachelor's degree, a middle class job, a mortgage and no other debt. I pay my taxes and contribute to charities and other than the unavoidable things like roads and the like receive no hand outs from the government. I'm a socialist because I feel its a fairer system. Does that refute your OP? If not, why not?

That just means you're not a true socialist...

I am a democrat socialist. Am I included in this? I have worked since I was 16. I have not gone to higher education though that is my fault not anyone elses. I pay my taxes, part of which goes to paying the bills of my whiney unemployed free market capitalist friends. If I recall correctly you are a government functionary by career. What, you think only you deserve government bargained health care, roads, a safety net against poverty. The free market and socialized services play off each other very nicely. Workers from both sectors should benefit from this confluence.

I don't believe the adherents of any one political or economic philosophy can hold exclusive rights to whining, bitching, and moaning. I believe those things are natural to the human species, and also certain breeds of dog.

I am a social-democrat. I believe in a strong welfare state, to help people who have fallen through the cracks. But not because they DESERVE it.

Only because its good for the economy to have a healthy, working population.

No one OWES anyone anything. Its not our responsibility to care for others. Its simply a wise thing to do to keep a society strong.

I recall a Russian-born woman within similar sentiments.

I think she wrote a book.

Thunder, in your last thread "All communists are deadbeats" you admitted you were wrong (about the title claim). Now you're committing the same exact mistake. Didn't you learn anything from the first thread?

Why then, your non-communist health care system should be the wonder of the modern world?

You don't seem to realise that the USA is dependent upon communist and socialist countries to keep afloat. See here for details: -

The USA also runs one of the biggest socialist systems in the world - for the rich. They get tax breaks and hand-outs unavailable to the poor. The rich have been allowed to buy the politicians and as a result get laws written in their favour - much like the USSR and China.

The US and other economies rely on moving jobs out of the USA to some of the poorest countries in the world. You therefore depend upon the poor, as well as communism and socialism for standard of living.

When you fix your broken health system and manage to keep jobs in your own country do let the world know.

I am anti-capitalist and democratic/socialist leaning.

I'm a graduate student with a scholarship, inheritance money and a small salary for teaching and performing research assistant work in addition to my school work and personal research. I've never been in debt or been unable to afford health care.

So does being critical of capitalism make me lazy and selfish, Thunder? Surely there couldn't be any other motivation, right? I just want the government to give me more, more, more, because I'm not willing to do any work.

Another trust fund anti-capitalist!

Why can't everyone just inherit their money, instead of relying on capitalism to make it?

Okay, so we have in this thread an "anti-capitalist" that inherited his money, and -- conversely -- a government worker ranting against socialism in the exact words of the objectivists...

Is there some special "total lack of self-awareness" award on this forum?

actually, I'm not ranting against Socialism and Communism per se, but against folks who claim to adhere to these ideologies.

I guess I'm just tired of hearing some of my looser friends and other acquantances bitching and moaning about how the government owes them this and that, but I never see them doing anything to try to improve their own lives.

Why don't you tell us about your tighter friends instead?

hmmm...most of my friends just work with the system that we have, and do indeed strive to improse their situation. though some of my friends just smoke lots of weed to deal with their issues.

I honestly only have one friend who is a big loser/Commy sympathizer. The rest are folks I know from college...or friends of friends.
