Coke creates advert that causes conservatives to go nuts

I'm drinking a Coca-Cola right now, which I bought purely out of spite for the proposed boycott. I like think of it as "the cause that refreshes".

Dear David,

How about, a rate of change that doesn't cause the cultural suite to disintegrate leading to social problems and a sense of malaise in people like myself?

Cpl Ferro

Have any examples of this? The USA is actually becoming a better place, socially.

You keep ignoring the fact that the English language is the interloper, here--by your lights we should all be speaking Spanish. Or German. Or Spanish and German. And Russian, and Japanese, and French, and Diné bizaad (or some Athabaskan creole), and...well, you (should) get the point.

Don't worry, though. We autochtonic Hispanohablantes have figured out that gringos will, eventually, get it, if we just speak loudly and slowly, and over-enunciate...

Dear slowvehicle,

I'm ignoring it because it doesn't matter that we don't all still speak the original form of Indo-European. In English-speaking countries we speak English, and that's not a bad thing, nor is preserving that fact a bad thing.

Dear ken,

I refer you to the work of Bruce K. Alexander, who wrote the book Globalization of Addiction, concerning psychosocial dislocation. Having one's language, culture, race, and religion come apart is more or less what that means, and the result is addiction and malaise.

Dear Dr.,

This doesn't seem promising, so I'll skip to the end.

I don't like that idea, in fact I reject it. We are a part of the universe, but so is a slug and a shrimp, and butter, and garlic. But I digest . . .

But you would have us only create the same things over and over. I think we need to create different things, constantly and should build on our prior creations, not worship them.

Assumes we have a value. I'm not there yet.

But you just said creativity was the basis of our value, not preservation. You can't even agree with yourself. Preservation is only important to the extent that it informs creativity, at the point where preservation overrides creativity it is worthless, stifling, and will lead to the death of civilization. Or a really bland tossed salad with ranch dressing. Not sure which is worse.

This makes no sense whatever as a diversity of languages will assist in communication, not hamper it. The Tower of Babel was a fable trying to explain a poorly understood condition that existed in the world, not a scientific study of communication in the workplace.

I'm sure you are not nearly as racist as this sounds.

I would recommend reevaluating that assumption based on factual evidence. There are threads here to help you.

It is an awful idea in every conceivable way. Please think more about it before you decide.

I am an IP attorney and I can tell you flatly that there is no IP law in the western world that prevents "Classical composers" from learning from and incorporating inspiration from modern music. Copyright will prevent direct copying, but not inspiration. If it did, there would be no modern music.

More importantly, all that you elevate as Classical Art was at one time "counterculture" - that is the natural progression of the arts. What you are seeing now, will some day be classical. As we now consider Frank Sinatra a classic, our children will some day refer to Madonna.

Only that it appears that you have not thought much about the consequences of what you desire. You love art that required the fertile ground of innovation to be produced, but now you wish to remove the fertilizer and create copies of that which you revere. If you can't see the folly in that, I can't help you.

If you can't see the absurdity in the idea that the globalist melting pot is not going to run out of its precious diversity once everything has slid in all directions and there's nothing you can measure any more, what can I say? We want to live in very different universes.

And Wagner is not Classical. Cf. the Schiller Institute.

How about some actual facts and evidence?

Thank you for at least finally admitting that the crux of your objection to multiculturalism is that simply it makes you and others like you uncomfortable. Now that we've successfully identified the problem, we can start looking at ways to address it.

One is for such people to exert their combined political and popular influence in an attempt (and a pretty clearly doomed one) to try to keep the influence of other cultural elements at bay, thus allowing them to continue shallowly enjoying the false sense of hegemony they've conjured up in their circumscribed world.

Another is for such people to wake up, take a look around them, and realize that their perceived cultural identity has been an illusion based on false premises all along, and that the only way they've managed not to notice sooner was by keeping their heads buried in the sand to a degree which modern communication and connectivity renders effectively impossible.

You can probably guess which one I'm in favor of. I know it's scary, but once you get used to it, it's really not that bad. People who don't look or speak like you are, on the whole, no worse than those who do.

Dear Quinn,

I vote for the option one, where we avoid letting in the world to spray-paint our carpets and smash the furniture. A country is like a home for the people who live in it, and the phenomena of disintegration of the cultural suite is painful, and that pain matters. You're presuming that that pain doesn't matter, that we should just buck up and get used to it, well bollux to that. I like my carpets and furniture to be as they have always looked, and hope they look that way for a long time to come.

Who's wrecking the place? Looks more like they brought a nice accent piece in and most of the family likes it.

Tell you what, you can sit in the den with your unchanging furniture and carpet, and the rest of us will go to neighbourhood party, listen to the reggae, while eating burritos, and drinking Cokes. Choice is yours, but eventually the furniture and carpet are going to wear out.

You're ignoring the fact that this was a Spanish-speaking country for centuries before it was an English-speaking country...at least where I live. But that's OK, you gringos have been like that since you found the place...

Reviled even? Jesus! Contempt before investigation, Foolmewunz. All of you, to a man, are ignorant of his ideas.

LaRoach is a fool. An evil one, but a fool. Dumber than hitler but at least as evil minded.

I remember him as a joke, but not a funny one.

I think the moderate left and moderate middle and moderate right think of him as a joke... Harold Stassen for the Me Generation. Over on the left, those of us who've run into him or his minions don't see the humor, other than if you ratchet it up to ridicule.

Religion, I would recommend recognising that Christianity is one of the three essential developments that lead to modern Western civilisation (the other two being the Renaissance and Classical Greece). Making it the official religion would help, I think.

That's a good justification for why classical Greek and Latin, with maybe Italian and French too, were once considered standard second languages for educated Americans, but it's not a very good argument for why modern English is better, if in fact Western civilisation was founded by people speaking Elizabethan English and lots of foreign tongues.

Try me. I'm very familiar with LaRouche.

Yes, on the left he is reviled.

Dear Foolmewunz,

Then, you can teach me: do you understand the meaning of √-1? I've been working with their introduction to the concept for a while now and don't quite get it.
