Coincidences are...just Coincidences

In first year university, I met a girl whom I thought was in my calculus class in high school, but I wasn't sure, so I started talking with her and then I finally asked her if her name was "Jane" and she just looked at me in a strange way, thinking I was stalking her. I then asked her if she was in my calculus class, which she wasn't and then I told her that she looked really similar to a girl I knew in my calculus class in high school. We dated after that, but like all good things, it came to an end!

This past year, I was leading one of the groups of students for frosh week through the city (Long standing U of T tradition, LashL might know) and I was talking with one of the frosh leaders and making jokes and whatnot. That passes by and then, the next night on Facebook, I get a message from a friend whom I haven't seen since we were 6 years old! We start talking, then I find out that he was the frosh leader whom I was having a laugh and all that with. We haven't seen each other in 15 years, and we're friends again!

My two cents...

When my mum was a student at Wits university in Jo'burg, she knew a guy called Anthony Goodwin who was also studying there. He eventually got a scholarship to study at Caltech, where it happens my mother's aunt and uncle worked, and her aunt especially was involved in the welcome program for international students. Through the help my mother gave Tony they became good friends, and she was there to support him when his mother died, leaving his father alone. Despite all efforts to try and introduce his father to new people, he would not be swayed.

Tony eventually moved to Melbourne with his wife Val.

Not too long after the events surrounding Tony's move to Caltech, my mother met my father, they got married, and my mother fell pregnant with my older sister. While in the hospital one day quite late in the pregnancy my mother just happened to strike up a conversation with another pregnant lady there - Alys. When my mother mentioned that my father was from Melbourne, Alys commented that she had a cousin living in Melbourne - would he know him? His name was Anthony Goodwin.

Turns out that Tony's father eventually did remarry, with Alys' mother after the death of her husband.

Tony is now my Godfather.

Well here's my two.

When I went to University, the grandparents of one of the people that was in the same hostel as I was, and become a good friend, lived right next door to my grandparents.

When I was visiting my gf in Omaha a while back we went to the Henry Doorly Zoo. As we were walking about we got stopped by an older coulpe who wanted to know if I was from New Zealand, which I said yes too. Turns out they'd been living in New Zealand for the past 6 years and had just moved back to Omaha.

When I was a Uni student I lived in a share-house with five or six other students. Every week day a couple of girls walked past the front of our house on their way home from school. One of them was a real cutie and being the normal kind of late teenage boys we were, we talked about her and made sure we caught a glimpse of her whenever we could.
Later the house broke up and we all went our separate ways. I went through a bit of aimless job hopping, eventually landing a job in a TV station on the other side of Sydney. It was a very small studio department with about ten people all together.

After working there for about a year, guess who joined on as the new trainee camera operator... Yep, that very same girl who walked past my door every day on her way home from school. We became good friends and even though I don't work there anymore, (she still does) we see each other regularly.

Also I only have a birthday once every four years. That is pretty unlikely as well.

Hehe. I was in a movie with Robert Blanche who was in "World Trade Center," so I'm even closer! With that degree of separation, I must be on the NWO payroll...maybe they don't have my current address - darn those inefficient conspiracy bureacracies!
:)

I was in an Auto Pro commercial so,,,, uh , no that does nothing.

However, I have two brothers and we all married women with the same first name.

A few years ago a bank near my apartment was robbed. By an amazing coincidence, the robber had the same height, build, and features as me. Not only that, but he used a fake gun that was just like the one I keep in my desk drawer with my nylon stocking masks, and he wore clothes just like the ones I had stuffed into my garbage can that day. It also turns out we had the same fingerprints. And, not only was the amount of cash he stole the same as the cash inheritance a relative of mine had just sent me in a duffel bag, but the serial numbers on the bills were all the same!

I sure wish my lawyer had seen this thread.

Respectfully,
Myriad

i have had so many coincidences in my life that i used to attach a special meaning to them but i'm over that now. This one was a double coincidence.

Originally from Georgia, in 1972 i was living in Las Cruces, New Mexico and a friend and i hitched a ride down to El Paso to see some friends. They had about 30 folks at their house that night and i only knew about half of them. i remember seeing a thin guy in a cowboy hat there but we never spoke to each other. Eventually that guy left and my friend and i spent the night at the house and the next morning we left to hitch back home.

We had gotten a ride out of the city but had to hoof it for a while. There was very little traffic going our way, but i saw a burgundy colored car in the distance that pulled up to give us a ride. It was a burgundy Barracuda and cowboy hat guy was driving. i told him i had seen him last night and also saw his passenger as well. He said he remembered us too. We all remarked on the coincidence.

They were just traveling aimlessly and didn't mind driving us home. We shot the breeze during the drive and found out these two guys had gone to UT at Martin (University of Tennessee, Martin). Then i told him that i once had a friend named Ed K____ who went there a few years before, and that "Ed had a burgundy Barracuda just like this one." My next door neighbor in Georgia had been roommates for two years with Ed at UT at Martin and Ed had spent a month one summer in 1967 or 68 at that house next door to mine in Georgia and i had ridden in Ed's car many times.

Cowboy hat turned around and told me that Ed was a friend of his too, and that Ed had sold him that very car in which we were now riding.

That was my favorite coincidence.

And people think that only happens in Kentucky. ;)
Happens here in Germany, as well.

Well, at least it has happened here at least once. I'm at work, and the web filter blocks all attempts to search for it, but there's an infamous case that pops up in the news here once in a while.

Like Gumboot's story, a brother and sister get separated by adoption. Years later, brother and sister meet and fall in love and have sex. The background comes out, and they find that they are brother and sister - but keep boinking. They've got three kids - I think, I've truthfully lost count - all but one of which is handicapped. Brother has been to jail for knocking up his sister, she only got out of a jail term once because she had a newborn baby (his.) He's out of jail, and back to shagging sis. As of the latest reports, he's had his balls disconnected so at least sis won't get pregnant again.

So, yeah, it happens.

Talk about coincidences--In 1972, I was living in Las Cruces, NM, and drove a Burgundy Plymouth Sport Fury.
I also knew lots of thin guys in cowboy hats.None of them drove 'Cuda's, though.

When I moved into my current house in 2001, I sent some pictures to the guy who's my best friend, down in Austin. Turns out he used to date the daughter of the people I bought the house from, and my friend had actually had sex in my house. Of course, when he and his wife came up to visit us, he had to pretend that he had never been there before. "The kitchen's over here, and the laundry room is this way."

"Oh, that's real nice."

I once dreamed that I was on a bus, and my mother (who had died several years before) got on and sat next to me. I asked her how she was, and she said "I'm very upset because John Denver died." We chitchatted a bit more, then I woke up. I told my then-wife about the weird dream I had, and we both chuckled over my mom's questionable taste in music.

It wasn't until the FOLLOWING morning that I heard Denver had been killed in the plane crash. My then-wife and I both got some serious goose bumps.

When I was growing up, there were these four other children that lived in my house. Turns out, we all had the same parents!
What are the odds of that?

Funny coincidence reading this post - the story was on the BBC news only a couple of days ago!

Apparently the couple (bro & sis) are now trying to make a legal challenge to the German anti-incest laws which (clearly don't) prevent their love. They're up to four kids now I think.

The laws don't prevent their love, that's true. They do, however, make it illegal.

Brother and Sister aren't the two sharpest tools in the shed, and they and their children provide a living example of why there are laws against incest.

They have 4 children now, and sis has a fifth child from the guy she was shagging to pass the time while brother was in the poky.

2 of the 4 children that they have together are retarded. That's the ultimate reason behind the law: The chance of an inheritable disease or retardation is enormously higher for the children of related parents.

Right now, the two are trying to get the incest laws repealed. There is some debate on whether or not to repeal the laws. Basically "what two adults do with their own sex organs is their own business" against "incest causes damage to the children and costs to society."

I also checked on the background. The brother was sent to live with foster parents when he was three. In 2000, he located his mother and met his sister through her. The relationship therefore started in the full knowledge that they were brother and sister.

Okay, here's my weird coincidence story:

A couple of years ago I was sitting outside one of the studios I work at, having a smoke, when some guy who was working on the session in our tracking room came out of the door. He looked at me and said "what's your name?"

"Mark", I said. He replied "what's your last name?"

"De Martini" I snapped, somewhat annoyed at being questioned like that.

He plunked down on the bench, giving me the "I know you" look. I'm sort of used to that; since I moved to L.A. I've encountered quite a few people at work who I had met during my time at Sigma Sound in Philly, but I didn't see anything at all familiar about this guy.

So I asked him "who the [rule 8] are you?" "Dan Schwartz", says he. "From Haddon Township?" says I.

It turned out that he was an old grade school classmate who I hadn't seen or heard of for over thirty years- and now we were working at the same studio three thousand miles from our home town.

He then reached into his pocket and produced a fortune cookie slip from the Chinese dinner they'd sent out for the previous night. It read:"Someone from your past will soon happily reenter your life".

What are the odds?

Actually, they're pretty good. Since we both wound up working in the same rather small industry in the same city, the chances were good that we'd eventually run into each other.

The fortune cookie's a bit of a trip, though.

Actually birth defects aren't likely until second generation incest. First generation incest has a negligible increase in risk of defects compared to unrelated people.

Either their parents are ALSO brother and sister ;) or they are just some of the unluckiest people around! The odds of that many children having defects is very small.
