Merged Code Pink at the Jefferson Memorial / arrested

Then maybe you should have answered the question instead of posting a wikipedia link.

Really? That's the only criteria? So they could declare free speech off limits except in a 10' x 10' area in central North Dakota?

And do you have any examples of a protest that was "out of the public eye"? Seems quite impossible in the information age.

Do you have a point? Or are you just JAQing off?

I'm trying to determine what your issue with the "free speech zones" are. So far all you've done is allude they're a Very Bad Thing but can't seem to explain why you believe this.

Same old story. Nutters go out looking for trouble and find it. Then when they find the trouble, they cry police brutality.

I'm not saying police brutality is justified, I'm just saying I was really hoping for some by the second minute of that video.

I think the easiest way to ask that question would have been to ask that question.

As it is, I'm not trying to prove any point about them in this thread, I'm not interested in what you as an individual think, and I have every reason to believe you're not looking for a sober, honest exchange of ideas. So I don't really have much of a reason to answer the question you're berating me for not having answered (even though you hadn't actually formulated it until this last post).

If you're seriously interested in a thread about free speech zones, by all means, start a thread about them

Yes I must say, I was really hoping that there would have been a good tazering or two. Nothing brightens my day more than seeing electric current run through a hippy via two prongs sticking out of their back.

When I saw "Code Pink" and "Lincoln" and skimmed to see people talking about dancing....well, I can't be the only one who leapt to the conclusion that the statue of Lincoln suddenly came to life and gayed out, and the feds snapped into action with the plan they'd always had for that eventuality.

Preferably with a 50-foot Joshua Speed robot.

Not sure whose side I take on this one. Even though the force might have been excessive, the cops were just trying to clear the area of their rediculousness and the dancers seemed to have fair warning.

Opinions?

Law enforcement officers have to do their job, which isn't an easy one. You say "might have been excessive" -- isn't that wrong by definition? I understand the flash mobsters had to be cleared, but clearly they were harmless goofballs--I don't see why so much force had to be used.

Is it more akin to a public square or a library?

Five demonstrators doing a rather pathetic free-form dance constitutes a flash mob now?

There's an argument that protesting the policy, where the policy is supposed to be in effect, is, in itself, free speech. I side with the dancers on this one.

You'd have a good point if they were doing their protest dance in a public forum. The Jefferson memorial is not a public forum.

Doing something they know to be illegal in order to protest its illegality doesn't make your actions any less illegal.

They weren't protesting anything. Just 9/11 truthers looking for trouble and finding it.

So we've pretty much established that dancing on memorials in the US is forbidden, unless you have a permit. But what about boogie-ing on down on ordinary graves? Is that okay, or just tacky?
