Coalition in Westminster

As German living (happily!) in the UK, I am still amazed about the British's reluctance for something like ID cards, or a proper residence registration system, while they are happy to live in the most CCTV-observed country in the world and have a heightened fear of identity theft.

For a lot of people it is the cost of them. My license could do the job.

I like the idea of proportional systems but strongly think that any list-based element should not be considered, as it prevents the voters voting out an individual candidate, so the party is the constituency that matters.

We have a proportional system in Norway, but you can cross people you don't like off the list. Or add people, even from other parties.

Last night had a whiff of nostalgia for me with the re-release of that popular chant from my youth "Tories Out!".

ETA: And I'm sure that the Tories and their troop of trained poodles will be heartened with the news that the number of people unemployed is getting back to good old Tory levels. I'm sure with the cuts they are planning they will soon be on track for breaking their past record! ;)
Ah Darat. 50k post in Politics. Shame on you.;)

Kindly bequeathed to them by the out going Labour Party who did of course end the cycle of boom and bust :)

I never understood how he [Brown] thought he could make that claim. Even if he thought that the UK was somehow being managed uniquely responsibly, did he think that its economy was insulated from global economic swings?

Some pair of safe economic hands. "No more boom and bust" and deficit spending at the top of a boom.

Well, I can understand that. Seems a bit too much and "German" of my home country to have both passports, ID cards, and driving licences. One photo ID should be enough.

However, the nice touch of the German system is that you have to register with the respective local authority when you move residence, and your current address is noted on your ID (not the driving license, though). This way, you get around most of those ridiculous "proof of identity" vs. "proof of residence" shenanigans I experience in the UK, i.e. you have to bring along either bank statements or utility bills with your address on, to prove where you live.

The party needs a strong woman at the helm, one who's not for turning...
