Palin bans reporters from meetings with leaders

NEW YORK - Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, who has not held a press conference in nearly four weeks of campaigning, on Tuesday banned reporters from her first meetings with world leaders, allowing access only to photographers and a television crew.

CNN, which was providing the television coverage for news organizations, decided to pull its TV crew, effectively denying Palin the high visibility she had sought.

I'm not sure I understand. Palin wanted the event recorded but did not want asked any questions?

If the event is recorded, she could still be asked questions about it at a later date. Why clamp down on reporters during the event? The only reason I can think of is that she wants a more pristine video clip that is separate from the embarrassing gaffes that comes with reporters' questions.

I agree with Rob and Ben, she did the right thing in trying to do this without a three-ring circus in attendance.

Kudos to Palin!

I agree, she did the right thing.

I agree, she did the right thing for her nation especially taking into account that..

She has never met a foreign head of state and first traveled outside North America just last year.

We would hate to embarrass America with such an under-qualified vp candidate on live TV.

Good for her.

I think it shows just how uncomfortable the McCain campaign is with Palin's knowledge base and interview skills right now. Yes, they do want the pristine video clip (which CNN seems to be denying them now). But the last thing they want is for her to make a gaffe that will overshadow an attempt to beef up her foreign policy experience.

Or the possibility that she would make a gaff that comes from just meeting the leaders themselves? Because that would be worse and also has a higher degree of happening.

I wonder if the GOP will ask the reporters in attendance to submit their pens and paper before entering into the event? *sigh*

I also wonder (and I believe I know the answer here) if Fox News will come in and cover this in place of CNN?

It's cool dude, I agree with him as well. See my post above this.

;)

I am sure that's what they were talking about.
no it isn't - they are both conservative and assumable republickers. Ben and I are not. Ben's point is Palin is rightfully afraid she will look like the incompetant she clearly is, their claim is she is just doing it for decorum' sake. Zero equivalence in those.

I just watched her meeting with Karzai on TV. There were 50 flashes per second from SLR cameras also. This meeting is covered, just not by CNN.

Good for CNN though. They took a stand, and acted when their demands weren't met. Ultimately it matters little however as she still got her photo op.

There has been an update:
Palin bars, then admits reporters to UN meetings

NEW YORK - Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, who has not held a press conference in nearly four weeks of campaigning, initially barred reporters from her first meetings with world leaders Tuesday, but reversed course after they protested.

At first, campaign aides told the TV producer, print and news agency reporters in the press pool that followed the Alaska governor that they would not be admitted along with still photographers and a video camera crew taken in to photograph her meetings with Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Colombian President Alvaro Uribe, who are here for the United Nations General Assembly this week. She also was to meet later with former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.

{snip}

According to the CNN producer who was let into Karzai's hotel suite with the photographers just before noon, Karzai was talking about his son. Palin was nodding, and asked what his name is. Karzai replied his name was Mirwais and explained that it means light of the house.

The media were escorted out after about 40 seconds.

Campaign aides subsequently announced that reporters would be allowed to accompany photographers into the later sessions with Uribe and Kissinger.

At that point, campaign spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt said it was all just a "miscommunication." Earlier, she had said, "The decision was made for this to be a photo spray with still cameras and video cameras only."

If Palin wants to meet with the world leaders in private, I have no problem with that, but when you ask for news coverage you really can't dictate the terms.
If she stated from the beginning she wanted no reporters admitted to the meetings, fine; I can understand why. But this business of inviting then disinviting then inviting reporters shows that someone on her campaign is not doing their job.
I would not be surprised if there begin to be friction between the people running the McCain campaing and Palin's personal handlers just on the grounds of simple competence.

Is it usual to not allow reporters in on a meeting with foreign dignitaries that is otherwise being fully documented with picture and video?

That's the problem I have. If she wanted no news coverage whatsoever except for a photo op at the beginning and end, fine; But once you admit any kind of coverage to the actual meeting it looks horrible if you try to dictate terms or limit it beyond physical reality.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26853766/

Presidents and members of Congress routinely allow reporters to attend photo opportunities along with photographers and the reporters sometimes are able to ask questions during the brief photo sessions, usually held at the beginning of private meetings.

It's clear the McCain Camp is absolutely panicked over their VP cand. choice. I don't think their attempts to hide who she is while showing her off is going to last much longer.
