CNN Doxxes a gif maker

My guess is, being bad, they were already far beyond concerns about looking bad. Punishing their political opponent was the overriding concern.

This signature is intended to irradiate people.

They've been told they are the Enemy by the current administration, and are being told that they are 'fake news' due to the fact that they are not fawning over the President. How SHOULD they respond?

This is playing to a limited audience of invested partisans.

Yeah, a limited audience of arch-conservative partisans like Glenn Greenwald and Johnathan Turley.

There is something self-evidently creepy, bullying, and heavy-handed about a large news organization publicly announcing that it will expose someone’s identity if he ever again publishes content on the internet that the network deems inappropriate or objectionable. Whether it was CNN’s intent or not, the article makes it appear as if CNN will be monitoring this citizen’s online writing, and will punish him with exposure if he writes something the network dislikes.

It's the antithesis of journalism for a news organization to monitor speech and decide whether someone is crossing a line and should be ruined.

Mr. Hole is a dolt.

Why is it that people who post trollish stuff say they're not really like that when someone calls them on their crap? They are really like that. "I'm not really a jerk, I was just acting like a jerk." Well, that makes you a jerk.

ETA: This story has nothing to do with free speech.

I think there is a fundamental difference in the reasons for doxing that frankly makes the CNN style more palatable.

Doxing a reporter and their family is only meant to serve as a vehicle for deranged people to harass them. I'm going to guess that the reporter's family, friends, and co-workers already know they are a reporter. It serves merely as a way to direct your it at them.

In the CNN case it is similar to what happened to Palmer Luckey. It informs friends, families, and co-workers of the hidden opinions of the person. They then have a new piece of information to assess the person they know

How are these things any different?

We live in a world where there has been how many attempts on Trumps life now, How many people were shot at that baseball field and how many people have been physically attacked by far left activists?

So whether you like it or not, there are just as likely to be "deranged people" on the left who will harass and possibly even harm a person as there are on the right ... and by "informing friends, family and co-workers of hidden opinions", you of course mean "ruin their life or have them fired from their job or ostracized for ****-posting on Reddit", right?

I mean this is a very well worn tactic of the progressive/hard left is it not?

I'm sorry, not directed at me but I'll chime in. When have there been attempts on Trump's life?

How many people were shot at that baseball field and how many people have been physically attacked by far left activists?
Those are not attempts on Trump's life. In the second instance, we could count, as we could count how many physical attacks there have been by far right activists.

Why would it ruin his life, get him fired from his job, etc.?

I mean this is a very well worn tactic of the progressive/hard left is it not?
If would be interesting to compare how often the right vs. the left does it; I don't have these figures at hand but someone reading might. Trump saying he'll pay legal bills of his supporters engage in those tactics suggests this occurs on the right as well.

Lets say you are right, do you think it should be that way?

Imposing undue regulation on the private sphere is something I'd thought you would dislike. Personally, I don't think we need to protect political speech to such an extent that we need to take away a private business owner's right to keep staff as he likes.

This is the gray area I'm interested in exploring. How far would those state laws go? Could they protect your speech against harassment from a corporation or individual?

There are many different laws, some state, some more local. They protect different things. Some have to do with preventing business owners from coercing employees from voting a certain way, some to prevent them from firing people who voted a certain way. A couple has to do with what we're talking about, preventing a business owner from firing someone for their political affiliations.

Not really, I didnt phrase it right. Think of someone posting twitter photos in work uniform off duty at a nazi rally. Something along those lines. Something that links your employer to your beliefs.

I'd fire that person in a heart beat.

Finally some sane voices here. Its textbook bullying and I hate that people hide behind political ideology in defending "the man". Cant we throw our political opinions out and defend our principles of right and wrong?

The "sane voices" are hard right apparently.

How is withholding a name a worse offense than publishing it, exactly?

I think the CNN strategy is rather clever: they've removed the platform of one alt-right nutjob and sent a clear warning to the rest.
Had they just published, it would have made the guy a martyr of the cause - he probably would have been picked up by Alex Jones straight away.

Was it nice?
of course not. But why shouldn't they fight back?

f you went exposing every person that posts stupid things on the internet you'd be at it for all eternity.

Yes it should be taken as read that everyone you interact with posts racist and antisemitic things all the time on the internet. Clearly we need to stop treating it as a character flaw and view it as presidential.

Punching back is only for properly right wing people like the president.

A massive corporation should fight back (threaten to ruin) those that make fun of them in a totally legal way?

The smart way would have been to release a humorous counter gif and try and win on the battlefield of ideas. Not to adopt a "nice life ya got, be a pity if something were to happen to it" threat.

That's how it should be, is it? Because the alt-right is an amorphous blob of misogyny and bigotry, and CNN is a news corporation, the former can do what they want and the previous can't report on it.

Nutters used to have to stand on street corners to preach their crap. I don't think they should expect more anonymity on the internet.

A few points.

As to how many attempts on trump's life, history will remember that Reagan had one attempt, and Trump up to this point.

While there would be harassment, there would be substantially less than on a right wing doxing. Obviously, there is a conversation to be had about the unintended consequences of our actions. I do want to focus on the intended consequences at the moment.

What is wrong with having someone ostracized or fired?

Punching back?

A billion dollar corporation with multiple media platforms is punching way, way, way down, and making themselves look like utter idiots in the process.

I'm not from a feuding culture. Is there a book that describes when it is up, down, first, back?

It's far, far beyond silly. CNN had the worst week imaginable for a news network and they follow it up with this.

This is all I'll say since I've been warned to stay on topic, but defending myself from claims that I'm a white supremacist and asking someone to post evidence of that claim or apologize is being a jerk?
