CNN Doxxes a gif maker

What rules are those, exactly?

If the rule is to stand behind what you post to the internet using your own name, Kfile appears to be doing just fine. HanAssholeSolo, not so much.

I wonder if they do and, even if they do, is it completely unfettered right? No possibility that they could be sued for doing damage to someone by doing so? And is it a good thing, even if legal?

BTW who else has this legal right that you claim CNN has? Does everyone have the right to dox anyone they like?
IANAL, but as I understand things, what you would sue for is libel. But that only works if the information isn't true and CNN had a reason to know it wasn't true when they published it. If you actually did post those nasty things online, then there's no basis for a libel suit.

There isn't a law anywhere that makes this kind of thing illegal either that I'm aware of. Maybe I'm wrong.

I don't think CNN did anything illegal. I just think it's plain wrong. Either publish the story or STFU. The press should not be in the business of threatening to reveal the identities of people who do things they don't approve of.

But I do wonder . . . could a hacker legally make a practice of finding out who posts racist material online and then threatening to reveal their identities unless they are paid?

That people's lives should be destroyed for wrong-think.
Are those the same rules followed by HanAssholeSolo when he doxed Jews for being Jewish? Just curious, since no lives were ruined on either side. You seem to be defending the least defensible side here, ethically speaking.

First off, what do you think the intent of doxxing is? Second, yes, that's exactly the sort of rules that the left helped establish. And now people like him get to play with those rules.

I wasn't aware that doxing required a particular mens rea. Generally, though, I'd say the goal is to harm the subject in some way.

In the case at hand, CNN employees are the only ones actually having their docs dropped. Keep on blaming the left though.

I never said it was a requirement. But, as you acknowledge, it's the general goal. And not just a little harm, mind you: considerable harm. If you want to do only a little harm, then you use a weapon which does limited harm. When you doxx someone, the potential harm is quite high, and doxxers accept that willingly and deliberately.

In the case at hand, CNN employees are the only ones actually having their docs dropped. Keep on blaming the left though.

But that's precisely my point: these sorts of tactics are never just limited to the case at hand, whatever that happens to be. Just like with the whole punching Richard Spencer in the face thing: you can't justify it with special pleading. The tactic, once permitted, will get used generally. And the tactic has been used, repeatedly, by the left. And not just doxxing either, but the general goal of punishing people for wrong think. Yes, I very much blame the left. This isn't the world I want to live it. I'd prefer it if nobody, including CNN employees, got doxxed. But it is the world that the left (including CNN) has made. And now they reap the whirlwind.

How convenient it must be to classify the world into two groups and assign blame to the one you're not in.

Who said there were only two groups? Not me. And none of this is at all convenient. It sucks. But I'm not going to lie about where the blame lies because that makes you uncomfortable.

Probably not. I'm pretty sure that's literally blackmail.

This signature is intended to irradiate people.

After reading a bit I see that every State treats this either under extortion, coercion or blackmail laws -and very differently at that. For example, in New York the crime of coercion is:

A person is guilty of coercion in the second degree when he or she
compels or induces a person to . . . abstain from engaging in
conduct in which he or she has a legal right to engage . . . by means
of instilling in him or her a fear that, if the demand is not complied
with, the actor or another will:
. . .
5. Expose a secret or publicize an asserted fact, whether true or
false, tending to subject some person to hatred, contempt or ridicule;
or

So let's assume that the reporter in question was based in NYC. Wouldn't this be a pretty straightforward case of coercion? If I were HAS, I'd probably be looking at whether or not I could pursue those charges.

Of course, every State is different. CNN is headquartered in Georgia and they don't have an equivalent coercion law. It's tricky.

That's the beauty of blackmail: The victim can't even pursue a legal remedy, without outing themselves anyway.

I'm still trying to figure out what part of 'we will out you if you don't do what we want' the progs find so praiseworthy. And why CNN's hurt fee-fees is the hill they've chosen to sacrifice this principle on. I mean, it's not like Trump retweeted some stupid meme about humiliating the Obamessiah. Wailing and gnashing of teeth over that, I could understand. But CNN? Not even as important to Americans as Nick at Night? That's what they're defending?

And you're not going to provide evidence because that would be effortful.

I like how even in the bizarre fantasy world you've concocted in which everything is the fault of the bogeyman left, the right are still weak-willed cowards who don't have the moral courage to be better than them.

Well, if anything, there's a better view from this hill than from the dung heap where the right have planted their flag.

Because there are circumstances where outing him would serve a legitimate news function. For example, if he was hired on by the administration to work in relations

Also, not blackmail. Blackmail (which i think should be legal) is the outing of private information. This would be tying public statements to the person who made them.
