AP reports that a white-tailed deer was cloned by Texas A&M University researchers. They said this breaktrough "could help conserve endangered deer species."

The other day, about two dozen white-tailed deer thundred across my front yard. Then we had the story about a white-tailed deer in the Washington, DC, subway. I do hope they're looking at the possiblity of conserving other species of deer!

(By-the-bye, is cloning deer okay with the Bush administration?)

AFAIK the Bush Administration doesn't have a stand on cloning animals other than humans.

But since deer are wall-to-wall in many parts of the U.S., why on earth would anyone want to clone them? Other than a funding stunt, of course?

White-tailed are turning into Suburban and Rural rats, but there are other species of deer that are endangerd. Additionally I believe this the largest non-domesticated animal the Aggies have Xeroxed so far.
