Clint Eastwood: "I don’t give a **** if gays marry"

Don't expect to see him marching in a Pride parade anytime soon, but gays may have found an unexpected ally in Oscar-winning director Clint Eastwood.


In the October issue of GQ magazine, Eastwood said that Republicans were making a big mistake by opposing same sex marriage.


"These people who are making a big deal out of gay marriage?" Eastwood opined. "I don't give a **** about who wants to get married to anybody else! Why not?! We're making a big deal out of things we shouldn't be making a deal out of."

Truer words were never spoken. I think it's why folks like me - who, like Clint, are in favor of gay marriage - were shocked that the vote on Issue 8 went the way it did. We're all thinking beforehand: Hey, everybody in California thinks like folks in or near Tinsel Town! Yay!!

I give a ****. When I came to JREF I was outspokenly against gay marriage. After a year or so of not being able to find a compelling reason to deny anyone the right to marry the person they loved I decided to be for rights instead od indifferent or against. I'm glad I did.

I came to JREF a deist, dualist, conservative. I've change a lot of opinions by debating and thinking critically about my views. Not always easy. But I'll say this, the dissonance has quieted remarkably.

When I was much younger I was briefly into Ayn Rand. But like REALLY into her. I even read her nonfiction works and those of Leonard Piekoff. Before that, I was super lefty. Somewhere along the way it dawned on me that there is plenty of hackery to be found in all dogma and that the answer usually lies in a mix of both approaches. Now, I'm still left leaning but I have a healthy skepticism about most of my beliefs. Of course, with the way factions set up on boards like this I'm sure that doesn't read.

I like it. I'm not a Democrat or liberal. I'm more interested in pragmatic realities. Right now these are mostly coming from the left.

Fine, I'm in the Screen Actors Guild and have done a bit of it here and there in my travels. I played NO girly-men, I checked! Although I was in a Schwarzenegger film, security agent. Secret Service Agent on West Wing. Marine colonel on JAG. Drunken street bum in Tall Tale. Cop. Lawyer.

Even so, I then counter my alleged girly-man acting (HA! ha, Ha, HA!) with 5 years active US Navy - more than 4 aboard nice steel ships (with hatches and stuff).

I arrived here much later than you, so I don't have much experience of that side of you, but I can relate to your change of heart. I was raised, from about the age of seven, as an evangelical Christian. Until around my late teens/early twenties I still clung to many of the dogmas that I had been indoctrinated with. But I found that there were certain undeniable facts that could not be reconciled with the world view that had been provided for me. It's not that those who indoctrinated me weren't well meaning and sincere, but I came to see that they were mistaken and that they were afraid to admit certain things to themselves. Reading Carl Sagan had a huge impact on me. I came to realize that reality could not be defined by my desires. And I learned that the universe as it is, is far more compelling and wondrous than the provincial superstitions that I was raised with. I realized that gods and demons are but expressions of our own fears and desires. And, among many other things, I realized that the actual abomination was to discriminate against the expression of love between consenting adults of any persuasion.

I'm sorry for rambling a bit, but blame the Speyside region of Scotland if you must.
