Poptech was starting lots of threads so he could flood the forum. I looked for the thread that looked like it was the most on-topic, and this was it. It might be possible to undo this, however, Poptech has now been banned, so it really shouldn't be an issue if you can live with having one cluttered section.

No sweat. Shouldn't be an issue as long as other denialists don't continue his conspiracy theory.

'Missing' heat may affect future climate change

http://pda.physorg.com/heat-solarenergy-missingheat_news190558013.html

Current observational tools cannot account for roughly half of the heat that is believed to have built up on Earth in recent years, according to a "Perspectives" article in this week's issue of Science. Scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) warn in the new study that satellite sensors, ocean floats, and other instruments are inadequate to track this "missing" heat, which may be building up in the deep oceans or elsewhere in the climate system.

"The heat will come back to haunt us sooner or later," says NCAR scientist Kevin Trenberth, the lead author. "The reprieve we've had from warming temperatures in the last few years will not continue. It is critical to track the build-up of energy in our climate system so we can understand what is happening and predict our future climate."

The authors suggest that last year's rapid onset of El Niño, the periodic event in which upper ocean waters across much of the tropical Pacific Ocean become significantly warmer, may be one way in which the solar energy has reappeared.

'Black box' plankton found to have huge role in ocean carbon fixation

http://pda.physorg.com/carbonfixation-carbon-phytoplankton_news190545060.html

Carbon fixation by phytoplankton in the open ocean plays a key role in the global carbon cycle but is not fully understood. Until now researchers believed that cyanobacteria overwhelmingly accounted for phytoplankton's role in carbon fixation in the open ocean. But now scientists at the University of Warwick and the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton have opened 'the black box' of eukaryotic phytoplankton and discovered that they actually account for almost half the ocean's carbon fixation by phytoplankton.

Blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, grow in vast numbers in the sunlit surface waters of the oceans, the photic zone. They use sunlight to 'fix' carbon by converting carbon dioxide into sugars and other organic compounds through photosynthesis.

Cyanobacteria belong to the 'picophytoplankton', the tiniest phytoplankton. Until now they have been thought to dominate carbon fixation in the open ocean, with species belonging to the genera Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus being particularly abundant.

Isn't "scientifically competent skeptics" an oxymoron?

I don't like to paint with too broad a brush on this sort of terminology, because I think there are some legitimate skeptics when it comes to this issue. Hell, I used to be one.

I think we need to separate the genuine skeptics with legitimate questions from the ideologically-driven deniers.

PopTech got banned?

Awww c'mon... I had to say it :)

New satellite image of volcanic ash cloud

http://pda.physorg.com/image-ash-resolution_news190557078.html

See link for photo.

This will have several effects if it persists;

1. making ice cap dirty will lower its albedo and cause more melt

2. dimming caused by the particles aloft will cut insolation and make for a cooler summer.

3. Lack of air traffic will also change both SO2 in the atmosphere and contrail dimming.

I Have No Idea what the net effect will be!!!

That is, The Science Is Settled, but we can't actually predict the result? ;)

Are there any climate models that include volcanoes?

I've yet to find one.

I'm talking about volcanoes erupting and changing the climate, not the constant water vapor, CO2 and sulfur dioxide they put out.

Do any models calculate major eruption events?

Don't know, to be honest. It's not relevant to the climate change we're seeing now.

Come to think of it, I think I have seen major eruption events modeled. Someone will have a link, I'm sure.
