Clarence Thomas and the Billionaire

Thomas has been claiming $50-100k in rental income for decades from a rental company that has not existed since 2006. This is likely a mistake as another company was formed, but how can such a mistake go unchallenged for almost two decades from a Supreme Court Justice? ...
IIRC years ago Ginnie took $800K for some organization that looked like it was really the Thomas' taking a bribe. Nothing came of it and from the looks of all these revelations, reporters didn't investigate much.

:popcorn1

I just heard on the Bradcast that Citizen's United raised funds to help get Clarence Thomas appointed. I didn't know that, and I'm not surprised that Clarence did not recuse himself from the Citizen's United trial.

Clarence should be in prison.

Return to talking about Clarence Thomas, please.

Don't expect Chief Justice Roberts to do anything meaningful against Thomas' corruption.

Jane Roberts, who is married to Chief Justice John Roberts, made $10.3 million in commissions from elite law firms, whistleblower documents show

Jane Roberts was paid more than $10 million by a host of elite law firms, a whistleblower alleges.

At least one of those firms argued a case before Chief Justice Roberts after paying his wife hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Details of Jane Roberts' work come as Congress struggles to reform the Court's self-policed ethics.

Two years after John Roberts' confirmation as the Supreme Court's chief justice in 2005, his wife, Jane Sullivan Roberts, made a pivot. After a long and distinguished career as a lawyer, she refashioned herself as a legal recruiter, a matchmaker who pairs job-hunting lawyers up with corporations and firms.
So that's Thomas, Gorsuch, and Roberts. I'd bet there are more of them IOW business as usual.

I wonder if any of the Democrats are guilty of this kind of thing. In a way, I hope so, that way we could finally get Republicans on board with creating ethics rules for the SCOTUS or holding them accountable to what every other Federal Judge has to adhere to.

Somehow I doubt that the Repubs would care about this kind of behavior or see it as unethical...unless it was only the liberal Justices engaging in it. Then they'd be clutching their pearls and needing a fainting couch.

I'm sure you are correct. At this point, if a liberal justice was found out to be participating in the same kind of behavior, Republicans would say "see, liberals do it too!" and then say that there isn't a problem because of it.

No, they wouldn't: they'd impeach a liberal justice as soon as they could. Why are people still pretending to believe hypocrisy is a problem for the right? All that matters is the results: more power.

But Sotomayor, Kagan and Brown Jackson are all transgender child-trafficking baby-murdering drug dealers who are mind-controlled by George Soros!!! The Bigfoots from Mars told me!!!

I agree. They'd impeach a liberal Justice quicker than Trump tells a lie.

Clarence Thomas Had a Child in Private School. Harlan Crow Paid the Tuition.

In 2008, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas decided to send his teenage grandnephew to Hidden Lake Academy, a private boarding school in the foothills of northern Georgia. The boy, Mark Martin, was far from home. For the previous decade, he had lived with the justice and his wife in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. Thomas had taken legal custody of Martin when he was 6 years old and had recently told an interviewer he was “raising him as a son.”

Tuition at the boarding school ran more than $6,000 a month. But Thomas did not cover the bill. A bank statement for the school from July 2009, buried in unrelated court filings, shows the source of Martin’s tuition payment for that month: the company of billionaire real estate magnate Harlan Crow.

The payments extended beyond that month, according to Christopher Grimwood, a former administrator at the school. Crow paid Martin’s tuition the entire time he was a student there, which was about a year, Grimwood told ProPublica.

“Harlan picked up the tab,” said Grimwood, who got to know Crow and the Thomases and had access to school financial information through his work as an administrator.

Before and after his time at Hidden Lake, Martin attended a second boarding school, Randolph-Macon Academy in Virginia. “Harlan said he was paying for the tuition at Randolph-Macon Academy as well,” Grimwood said, recalling a conversation he had with Crow during a visit to the billionaire’s Adirondacks estate.

And of course...

Thomas did not report the tuition payments from Crow on his annual financial disclosures. Several years earlier, Thomas disclosed a gift of $5,000 for Martin’s education from another friend. It is not clear why he reported that payment but not Crow’s.

“This is way outside the norm. This is way in excess of anything I’ve seen,” said Richard Painter, former chief White House ethics lawyer for President George W. Bush, referring to the cascade of gifts over the years.

I loved this bit:

ProPublica sent Crow a detailed list of questions and his office responded with a statement that did not dispute the facts presented in this story.

“Harlan Crow has long been passionate about the importance of quality education and giving back to those less fortunate, especially at-risk youth,” the statement said. “It’s disappointing that those with partisan political interests would try to turn helping at-risk youth with tuition assistance into something nefarious or political.” The statement added that Crow and his wife have “supported many young Americans” at a “variety of schools, including his alma mater.” Crow went to Randolph-Macon Academy.

The kid is growing up with a Supreme Court Justice raising him "like a son". How "at-risk" is he?

*For those of you who do not know, in US political lingo, "at-risk youth" is often used as code words when "black children" is too on the nose.

He has been adopted by a Black American, making it almost impossible for him not to become a drug-dealing gangbanger.

Duh.

Most black Americans are law-abiding, but in this particular case I do fear he may follow the example set by his famous grandfather.

And not just a SCOTUS father, a rich one. Estimating what else he earned on top of his SCOTUS salary of $285K was a whole bunch more for expenses and that's before he got a bunch more in various schemes from Crow and others.
