What does JREFF think?

Perhaps some background to that bill might be appropriate. The investigative news program W5 just recently aired an episode on two cases of fatal shootings by RCMP officers that were very questionable based on the evidence presented but in which the RCMP cleared the officers involved of any wrongdoing. Then there's the infamous Dziekanski case.

I would recommend to readers of this thread to watch the program first and then offer comments on the legitimacy of the proposed bill.

It looks like they do need some oversight. Of course you have to be careful who you select for the oversight role. You don't want the people behind the corruption to be in the oversight postion... It would only get worse.

Well, at the very least, there seems to be a problem with the RCMP in British Columbia, which is where all three incidents took place.

This bill shouldn't be interpreted as casting aspersions on the competence of the RCMP. It's just good practice to eliminate or at least minimize the potential for conflict of interest in any investigation.
