Civil Unions coming to Illinois?

yes or no...or does marriage just become truly meaningless?

My marriage is not affected one way or the other when it comes to these questions. If there are people who somehow think that, magically, marriage in general (including their own) is somehow demeaned by gay civil unions/marriage, then I think they've got their own problems within their relationships to work out.

Actually, it strengthens marriage. It creates stability in families through times of trial like sickness and death. My opinion is that we need to allow marriage between any adults who want to marry, or we should eliminate the civil institution of marriage entirely.

Different-race couples could already marry in every single state in the country before the legalization of interracial marriages...they had the SAME rights to marry as Same-race couples did.

Just like same-sex couples and different-sex couples today.

so what's the problem, right?

Gay people don't have the right to marry the person they want to marry.

It is perfectly viable to ask if pro same-sex marriage people believe that there should STILL be some kinds of restrictions to marriage or not.

Both parties should be willing adults that are of age. No coercion should be involved. It should only be made illegal when there is a valid interest of the State. Polygamy is bad because of the social disparity it would inherently cause, imho. Parents marrying children is bad because of the undue influence parents have over their kids (which is a mild way of stating lots of problems). Siblings marrying have similar problems, and really the idea of some approval for pair bonding within a household setting I think does muddy the waters in a bad way as well, imho. Of course, there are the genetic issues of such close relative marrying and having children, and I think the State should avoid a "you can marry if you don't have kids" game.

Good job, Illinois. It's a step in the right direction.

Unfortunately, I expect North Carolina to take a step in the wrong direction and enact an anti-same-sex-marriage ammendment to our state Constititution in the next year.

If I loved and was sexually attracted to my female cousin and wanted to marry her, many states won't allow that either.

But if you hopped to a different state and got married there, your marriage would be recognized by the federal government and your own state.

To be honest, the only restriction I believe in is it being between two consenting adults. If one wants to marry their cousin, or marry 4 other people, I support that. In fact, I'm a pretty firm supporter of polyamorous marriage rights.

So what changed to marriage laws do you think are needed to permit polymarriage? How will these impact binary marriage?

I agree with the above responses to that question.

And I'll ask:
Do you think that interracial marriages made marriage less meaningful?

I do think that letting women own property destroyed traditional marriage.

I doubt they would at all really.

There'd be an impact, since you'd have rich men marrying multiple women, most likely. It would become a status symbol and so I think there'd be a significant cultural impact in the long term.

Hmm, not sure what rich women would do.

Why only rich "men"? I'm not rich, and I'd probably marry more than one individual. (not for a status symbol either)

Being willing is not the same as would.

Trophy Wives by the dozen.

So then, are only rich people in polyamorous (not to be confused with polygamous) relationships?

If the "trophy wives" are consenting, I see no problem if that's the situation they want to be in (hardly what most polyamorous relationships are like though)

It would not be good to suggest that partners in polyamorous relationships are "trophies".

I am not poly but I support it for people who want to be in romantic relationships involving more than two informed, consenting, happy partners.
