Citizens Aware And Asking - harrassing Concerned Scientists

Oddly enough my local butcher used to work as an engineer for Lockheed Martin. Butchery is his retirement profession. I love swapping stories with that guy, and he makes the most amazing bacon ever.

But I digest digress. UCS strikes me more as a left-wing political group than a scientific organization. Why don't they try the NSF or the AAAS? You know, real scientific organizations.
Novel approach! :)
... or even more unique, they could try submiting the Harrit paper to a real chemical science journal and get a review fom real chemists.
Its sort of a corollory to the adage " comparing apples to apples rather than apples to oranges" in that this would be " when comparing apples to apples its best to have apple experts rather than orange experts"

eta: it strikes me though that AE911T would be using potato experts in comparing apples to apples and justifying it by mentioning that in French , "potato" is "pomme de terre" , literraly "apple of the earth"

A new website, set up by a small organisation called "Citizens Aware And Asking" is out to harrass scientists.

Its mission:

And on the page "What's the plan", they state:

Nano-thermiters, out to harrass people with much better things to do

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is a non-profit organisation of scientists, founded in 1969, concerned mostly with environmental policies and related topics. Apparently respected, apparently perceived by some as "leftist".

But who are "Citizens Aware And Asking"? I find no names, no address, no nothing on their page!

Ah, here is some info:
http://911blogger.com/news/2013-01-22/911-free-fall-11713-911-truth-and-union-concerned-scientists

Yaz is Yasmin "Yaz" Manley, a journalism graduate who joined Gage's petition last June. She is introduced starting at 9:00 minutes.
"Omar" is Omar A. Musa - can't find him at AE911T. According to he host, starting at 9:43, he "went to two years of engineering school at USC, then left to join the army in 1982 and served as a medic in the 7th Special Forces Group until 1986. He became a registered nurse after he got out and has remained one since. He's got a degree in history from UCLA.". So he would be approximately 51 years old.
At 11:00, Yaz says that Omar is "also" her brother, and calls both their "conversions" to trutherism "awakenings". Woah!
Here is Omar's media gallery at Photobucket
Here is Yaz, and her husband Richard, saving water in San Marcos, CA.

Here is a letter from september 2012 in which Yaz and Omar describe how they reach out to the ASCE. It's in a Ron Paul Meetup-site. Hmm!

In the radio episode, host Andrew Steele pretty much admits that he is promoting first and foremost AE911Truth.

Could Gage somehow be behind this harrassment drive? I found the following addresses:

Union of Concerned Scientists:
West Coast Office
2397 Shattuck Ave., Ste. 203
Berkeley, CA 94704-1567

Richard Gage:
2342 Shattuck Ave., Suite 189, Berkeley, CA 94704
(That's the AE911Truth office address)

Those two offices are a mere 400 ft apart from one another:

Soooo ... should we harrass Yaz and Omar and fill up their mailbox?

Mess up some idiot rectum eaters? Go for it!!:D:D:D

What is this statement all about?

Complete crap, like everything else in the Truth Movement.

Shuttle SRB's use aluminum chemistry, specifically aluminum powder and ammonium perchlorate. To further confuse the Truthers, there is a trace amount of iron oxide -- insignificant in the reaction, it works as a catalyst here -- and a significant amount of polymer binder that keeps the solid fuel in shape even while burning and subject to the acceleration and vibration of flight.

Since the "nanothermite" that Truthers fuss about is actually paint, containing some aluminum compound -- an inert one, but never mind -- and some iron oxide -- in this case, rust scale, don't be picky -- and a binder since it's paint, they think it's the same.

However, Shuttle SRB's do not undergo a thermite reaction. They combust. The aluminum and ammonium perchlorate generate a large volume of gas, required for any rocket engine, while thermite does not. Neither does nanothermite. The SRB reaction also leaves free oxygen to react with the polymer, so it burns as well. "Explosive nanothermite" on the other hand requires a phreatic reaction (i.e., boiling) of the binder, or else relies upon atmospheric oxygen as in Dr. Jones's ham-handed DSC tests.

The Shuttle SRB's were designed in the late 1960's and early 1970's, around thirty years before nanothermite -- the real kind -- was ever produced. The two have nothing in common whatsoever. To suggest otherwise is no more intelligent than claiming table salt contains mustard gas. :p

Well, sure, of course you would say that!

Rocket Scientist Hugger!

I think someone should send them this blurb from the UCS website.

UCS analysis doesn't gather dust. We collaborate with respected researchers across the world and together with concerned citizens, we actively engage policymakers, the media, and other organizations to extend the reach of our work and drive positive change.

Why with a little Truth-Mining, you could turn it into a downright refusal to entertain their offer.

UCS... doesn't gather dust. We collaborate with RESPECTED researchers across the world...

Seriously, the ASCE response was a nicely worded smackdown. Basically, "go interest someone in a political position to get some funding". They must've then tried to figure out where to find some hippie-dippie sympatico sciencey types and came across UCS.

Here we have Yaz, appearing at a UCS event (June 13, 2012):

At 3:55, she asks:

Yaz Manley said:
How will you help facilitate the de-politization of these issues, so that at least a scient... science can be looked at, regardless of the outcome, just the science...?

Sp, she wants to take politics out of the 9/11 "science", right?

Wrong!

At 5:58, in the very same video, she declares:

Yaz Manley said:
The events of 9/11 have launched two major wars, cost countless lives, diverted enormous amounts of resources, as well as done much to undermine efforts to address both fossil fuel dependency and climate change.
This to introduce why she feels a new investigation is necessary.

Truthers - having double standards since 2001.

And the Truthers just keep getting dumber.
I am no fan of Concerned Scientests...who, IMHO,often put their science second place to their politics...but they don't deserved being harrased by the Twoofers.

Apparently, Scientists for 9/11 Truth have been trying to do this for years. There's this letter, dated 2 years ago. I presume their urgent response speaks for the level of concern the Union feels about this issue.

Is this video already posted?
Union of Concerned Scientists publicly questioned about 9/11 at the Center for Science and Democracy West Coast Launch

And the Truthers just keep getting dumber.

I was initially concerned as well. Truther scientist Laurie Manwell was able to publish this conspiracy crap in an SSCI-listed journal, The American Behavioral Scientist. The journal has a lousy impact factor, but it's the sort of place you could publish,
The Exxon Valdez and BP Oil Spills: A Comparison of Initial Social and Psychological Impacts*
or
Welcome to Me-Mart: The Politics of User-Generated Content in Personal Blogs
So you never know. But as it turned out, the Union of Concerned Scientists has shown no interest at all in the crazies.
