CIA secret prisons leaker fired

It makes me feel so reassured to know that national security agencies believe the polygraph is effective.

Why don't they just cast runes?

The higher ups know perfectly well that its bunk, but they continue to use the polygraph to trick people who think it works into confessing to stuff. They have looked at it rationally and have decided that the benefits of convincing people this stuff works and tricking them into saying damaging things are worth the problems they get with false positives.

Don't just assume there is a woo conspiracy because a polygraph was used or that there is no other evidence. The media tends to report on poly results because they themselves aren't very aware of what poly is.

The polygraph placebo effect?

The only real question: Did this guy break the law? Or did he blow the whistle on an illegal operation?

Polygraphs are a joke.

What is your name?

Which would be great if it wasn't for issues with false negatives.

According to the EU, the former.

Meanwhile, this should be a fun trial.

"You revealed the existence of our secret prisons!"

"Did not. There are no secret prisons. Show me these prisons I supposedly revealed."

"Well, OK, good point. There are no secret prisons. Let's get lunch."

Ah, but everything's a negative until it's tested. That some of those negatives which are false doesn't make the polygraphs ineffective. The polygraph is a terrible tool for determining truth telling. But it's still a powerful investigative tool, when used by a skilled examiner.

Except for the fact that an examiner can also manipulate results and interpretation to indict someone for nothing at all.

Polygraphs are an abuse, period.

:bowl:
:dl:

Except that it probably won't work that way, yeah.

Ooh, wah. An examiner can also plant heroin in your shirt pocked, smear gunpower onto your hands and slip your DNA sample into the sample taken at the scene.

you miss the point, jj. There are no results other than those to which the one being tested admits.

it is an interrogation tool that elicits confession.
it is also a tool for public smearing just in case a confession is not forthcoming.
it is worthless in court for good reason.

The guy in the picture kinda looks like an old withered G Gordon Liddy.

Yeah problem is that it is used by the CIA. They have been known to decide people are inocent based on it's results.

You missed the point, Manny, that doesn't have to happen in a polygraph examination. All it takes is a wild-a**ed idea on the part of the examiner.

In short, it's a bunch of raging quackery...
