Christopher Hitchens

Guess he'll be giving up the booze and fags.

I'm not a fan, but I hope he recovers.

Ah no. Both my brother-in-law and mother-in-law suffered from cancer of the oesophagus. I wouldn't wish it on anyone :(

Up yours, cancer

Far and away the most talented polemicist in the business. Get well soon, Hitch.

With as much as he smoked and drank, something like this isn't that surprising.

I wish him well and hopes he gets better.

As much as I like his comments, I really don't care for him as a person. He is rude and egotistical. I recall that he insisted on being able to smoke when he spoke at TAM3, even though nobody else in the room could smoke. And he was a jerk to people who asked honest questions.

But I still don't want him to die.

It's strange to see Hitchens vulnerable.

I can't speak for him, I don't know him, but he always struck me as someone who acted as though he was utterly indestructible. I'm guessing this came as a complete shock to him.

Anyone else notice this comment (it's the first one) attached to the article on the web page linked?

Hitch, I'm not trying to be flip but I've reading up on this thing you have. You have to go alternative. The chemo will hasten it. You have to do a radical cleanse and detox then go with acupuncture. Acupuncture helps the body cure itself. The medicos will kill you. That's what they do in the cancer industry - kill you with the "cure". You are strong and you're realistic. You're no snow flake. Face this and deal with this for what it is. If your body can't heal itself then you're over. Don't let the medicos destroy what's left of your body's ability to heal itself. The medicos are dangerous. DO NOT TRUST THEM! You can't rail against religion then put your faith and life in the hands of those false prophets of the cancer industry!

Unfortunately, I've known many atheists who have been completely irrational when it comes to things like that: "No! This stuff really works!".

Hitchens will not be converting anytime soon.

No, it's all ok. This illness is actually a blessing from God so that he can repent.

For such people *any* bad stuff happening to *any* atheist is a sign of gods. Just like the good stuff is (hypothetically : good stuff : gods helped save the little girl from drowning / gods smite the atheist). Naturally they are usually very very silent when the contrary stuff happens (hypothetically : little girl get raped and murdered / well known murderer get out of jail out of a technicality and get a long prosperous life in freedom).

I wonder what they tell when a well known atheist beat its cancer and continue to live to an old age ? I bet it is something like "god forgave him".

To such people *EVERYTHING* is painted in the light of a personal god intervening in lives.

It is best to ignore them. They are "lost" to rationality.
