I didn't know whether to put this in Humor or here. But it's so horrible that Humor seemed wrong...

From a separate reading on Halloween I ended up at the Landover Baptist Church forums. I found this.

Are they really trying to be funny? Or have I fallen victim to Poe's law? I can't tell. It's from last year, but still...

This is a site devoted to ridiculing Christian fundamentalists.

OMG jm, I need a drink! :(. I thought I came out of an abusive religious past. This makes what I went through look like nothing. I was not taught to hate people. They are obviously not kidding. And even if they were kidding, it is SICK. Notice all the OT quotes? They are following after the demongod YHWH.

According to Wikipedia: "The site was created by Chris Harper, who obtained his Master's Degree in English Literature from George Mason University in 1993 after being expelled from Liberty University (founded by Jerry Falwell) in 1989 for producing a satirical radio show which Liberty's administration found offensive. Harper frequently appears at atheist conventions playing the character of 'Pastor Deacon Fred Smith'." See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landover_Baptist_Church

So now what do you think about it?

Even if it is meant to be satire, it's still just sick. Not funny at all.

What's really scary is that people who actually do think that way might use that site as a validation of their "morals". It's not readily obvious that it's a joke.

In the running for the most unfunny parody I've ever seen, slightly more tasteless than Bonzai kittens.

Ah, the bonsai kittens. That WAS in bad taste, wasn't it. Off to see this parody site.

Well, I guess

1. humour is a subjective thing. I've seen people get extended fits of giggles at even the most retarded kind of things, including typos.

2. just like for everything else, the Dunning–Kruger effect applies ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning–Kruger_effect ) Most people trying to be funny simply aren't half as good as they think. And some aren't funny at all.

3. I don't know if this particular site is such (though the thread kinda looks that way), but I think Something Awful imitators are the worst offenders. Heck, even on the original Something Awful, there were a select few people who were good at tasteless humour, and a lot which were... something awful, really. The imitation sites and reviews and threads are done mostly by the latter. 'Nuf said.

Bash.org deserves a second place probably too.

Ideally, parody should be used to point out absurdities like theonion.com. When people ask on that forum if they are kidding and they say "no", and when they post pictures of real downs kids and joke about killing them, I just don't see what audience they are trying to reach or what point they are trying to make. It is offensive to both Christians (sane ones) and atheists.

Praise be! That is one fine forum! I feel invigorated just from its proximity!

I find the site very funny. Especially when they highlight ignorance. I like it. Tough cheddar.

Generally I find Christian attempts at humour to be laboured and embarrassing.

The best part about Landover Baptist is the hate mail. Fundies can't tell it's a parody about 75% of the time. Even when the disclaimer calls it "The Landover Baptist Parody Website" they apparently don't know what parody means.
