New Jersey Republican Gov. Chris Christie defended his decision to nominate a Muslim judge to the state Superior Court against conservative critics who warned that the new judge will implement Sharia law.
The notoriously blunt-spoken Christie calling their fears "crap" and "crazy."
Article

I am not a big fan of Christie, but I have to give him credit here. You have to applaud rational speech in this current climate regardless of who it comes from.

I am not saying Sohail Mohammed is a good candidate, because I really do not know. I tried to find some information on him but there was simply to much bat crap crazy links to sort through that had little (if anything) to do with his experience and focused entirely on the Muslim part.

A lot of the comments on the article are good examples of that tolerance christians like to pride themselves in.

I very much admire Christie for the content of this message and the forcefulness with which it was delivered. He didn't resort to any mealy-mouthed equivocating. He plainly stated plain reality: Sharia has nothing to do with anything. People talking about it are jackasses.

That's all it will really take to get elected.

Too bad he can't do the same thing in regard to gay marriage which is something he's "not a fan of". If not for religious reasons, why?

Ditto. Major props to Christie for both content and tone.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of Christie (for multiple reasons), but he did good on this one. Real good :)

Christie 2012!!!!!!! (or maybe 2016!!!!)

Don't get your hopes up. With most of the GOP contenders for 2012 beating the "Muslims are going to institute Sharia law on us all!" nonsense, more reasonable Republicans like Christie stand less than a snowball's chance in hell of getting past the primaries. He just kissed goodbye any chance he had of ever getting into higher office as a Republican.

It's refreshing to see a politician of any party who's willing to be frank and not pander to bigotry or even be euphemistic (or 'politic') about it.

Oath?
oh i can hear the "but what about taqiyya" coming :D

I am not sure what it says about the Republican party when Christie stands out as an example of reasonable.

To your point, I think Jon Huntsman is reasonable (not that I agree with him) and he cannot seem to get any traction in the current Republican contest.

Of course current polling shows people with an unfavorable view of the Tea Party is on the rise. Maybe there is hope.

The problem is that Christie only has one tone: talking to critics like they are stupid. Some times that is called for, but not all the time.

Remember this is the guy who got belligerent when asked about sending his kids to private school. (Video)

I am not sure how fair or relevant the woman's question was, and Christie is by no means the only politician to get this question, but I think this is a textbook example of how not to answer a question.

I am reminded of a quote from The American President: "With all due respect, sir, the American people have a funny way of deciding on their own what is and what is not their business."

I am not sure this is something Christie has figured out yet.

Nonsense. "Plain speaking" is not measured by the content but rather by the audience.

When Bachmann speaks: plain speaking to the Tea Party
When Obama speaks: plain speaking to Dems (well, some anyway)
When Ron Paul speaks: plain speaking to libertarians
When Romney speaks: plain speaking to Wall Street.
When Santorum speaks: plain speaking to Christian Reconstructionists

and so on. Yet when each of these - and others - speak, they massively contradict each other.

In short, there is no such thing as "plain speak". And, more to your point, whatever "plain speak" is, it will not inexorably lead to electoral success.

It's pretty sad when speaking out in plain terms against a really really over-the-top nutty and insane position is considered remarkable and praiseworthy.

Really? Got a link on that?

This one is pretty fresh------------

"Public perception of the tea party movement, which many see as the driving force that kept Republicans from voting to raising the debt ceiling without implementing unprecedented spending reductions, is at a record low. In a New York Times/CBS poll released Friday, 40 percent of respondents said they held an "unfavorable" view of the movement, up from 29 percent before the debt negotiations began in April, -------"

Props to Christie.

See Democrats? That's how it's done.

Johnny the article in your sig line is over a year and a half old. Where is the boy now? I can't find anything more current online so far.

Just curious. And Make-A-Wish has great stories like that.
